We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kimberly Christopher . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kimberly below.
Alright, Kimberly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
Well, honestly, I had a “just go for it” attitude when I started my business, so if I had to go back in time, I would still start my business exactly when I did.
I launched Roxy Cosmetics in 2018 after receiving several product-related inquiries during makeup application sessions. I had been doing makeup on myself, friends, and family for years, and there was always someone questioning whether I sold the products I used.
These inquiries came at a good time. I always had an interest in starting a business, and they helped me to narrow my focus on the cosmetics products market.
Upon considering the cosmetics products market, I did not launch my business right away because I took time to research the industry and market. However, I did not want to spend so much time on research that I never acted, so I went for it upon setting a launch date.
At the time of starting Roxy Cosmetics, makeup had quickly become a first love of mine, so I knew I had the passion it would take to run a business focused on catering to the beauty product needs of customers. This passion confirmed that my timing was right, and I took the leap by starting small and have been progressing from there.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am Kimberly Christopher, owner of Roxy Cosmetics, a cosmetics and makeup brand that serves the beauty needs of customers through luxurious yet affordable products.
I fell into the beauty market years ago when I started experimenting with and learning the basics of makeup through tutorials and other resources. From there, I immediately got hands-on training through application of what I learned by practicing beauty creations on myself—and eventually others, after consistently receiving their compliments and requests. I loved the results of my work and continued to build my skill set and get experience through practice.
I gained a lot of knowledge about products through makeup artistry, and after years of helping others to look and feel their best through application, I launched Roxy Cosmetics to supply customers with quality makeup products, tools, and accessories they can use to create captivating looks and boost their confidence for different occasions.
One of the things that sets Roxy Cosmetics apart is product quality. I believe in selling great products at reasonable prices and love knowing that customers speak highly of them and their long-lasting abilities.
Altogether, I have been enjoying this journey and am always looking for ways to better serve the product needs of my customers.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
Social media has been an important piece in building an online presence and audience for my business.
Building an audience on these platforms has taken a lot of time and effort, so consistency and patience played major roles in my journey.
The first step in my journey included choosing social media platforms. While I now maintain active accounts on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, I started with a focus on Facebook and Instagram for business first before most recently adding TikTok.
From there, already aware of my ideal customer, the foundation of building my audience on social media has consisted of the following:
• Sharing Quality Posts – I have always made it a priority to share a mix of engaging and relevant videos and images of quality. I never post videos and images of myself only, but also post videos and images of my customers as a form of thanks and recognition.
• Engaging With Interest – I believe engagement is a great way to build positive relationships and community. For me, engaging with interest has included things like responding to comments, messages, and mentions as well as featuring customers on my pages.
• Learning and Improving – Keeping an eye on social media insights is important when building an audience, so I have always made time to stop and learn what is working and what is not working. I use this knowledge to make changes where necessary.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I learned the importance of building a reputation for my Roxy Cosmetics brand very early in my business journey. I entered the market as a new business with no brand credibility or customer recommendations for my products but worked to earn them by:
• Building Relationships – A focus on building trusting relationships has helped me to build a reputation within my market. I have always been able to make connections by engaging and collaborating with others, both online and offline.
• Managing Expectations – Customer satisfaction is important to me, so I have always set out to be clear on things like how long orders will take to ship; when and how to cancel an order; and what to do if there is a postal delivery issue.
• Providing Good Customer Service – I have always treated customers as humans who deserve respect and appreciation, because I know I like to be treated this way when I buy from other businesses.
• Encouraging Customer Feedback and Reviews – I have always encouraged customers to provide their honest feedback and reviews on things like customer service and product quality. Feedback and reviews have proven valuable in both giving my customers a voice and showing others the value of the products that I sell.
