We were lucky to catch up with Kimberly Butin recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberly, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I would say that I’ve known I wanted writing to be a huge factor in my life for as long as I can remember.
I actually started writing poetry around the age of nine. At the age of eleven I won a contest and had the opportunity to have my first published poem.
Having that experience at such a young age – it stuck with me. Being able to move people with words is something I believe I’ll always wish to pursue.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m a poet who publishes her poetry across social platforms. My largest following is on Instagram, currently.
My poems are pretty autobiographical but I try my best (when the opportunity arises) to write about issues that are important to me.
Currently you can find poems about the foster system, being an adoptee, surviving an abusive relationship, as well as different every day topics we as humans tend to encounter.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My social media strategy has shifted a lot since I started posting about two years ago.
The first thing I always do is research. I do a lot of research on each platforms algorithm, the most popular hashtags that are currently being used, as well as groups and other forms of community engagement to participate in.
I’d say the most important thing you can do is to stay consistent in your postings and to keep up to date on any algorithm updates that come out.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I’d say one of the biggest resources I wish I’d used earlier in my career would be community. There’s so many different ways we can meet other creatives. Sometimes just talking through our writing process or sharing ideas is enough to help you further develop your skills.
I wish I’d known how many free websites and apps there were available.
