We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimberly Bien a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberly , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I started making skincare products out of neccesity for my sensitive skin. Now I know that sensitivity is related to Lupus, an auto immune disease, so it’s important to my health and the health of my customers, that I use healthy ingredients.
Kimberly , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started making products for my family and friends which lead to me selling and forming a business ten years ago. I feel so much joy when customers share their skin feels better after using my products because I understand the discomfort they were experiencing. I did not invent soap or natural skincare by any means but I work hard to ensure my “Soapy Friends” have a product they can trust. I’m fortunate to be part of community that supports quality makers and informed consumers.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
In the last decade my business has had many selling formats from Farmers Markets, Pop Ups, Wholesale, Brick and Mortar, and online sales. Like most small businesses, I continue to pivot as needed and am excited to share I will be opening a brick and mortar in Denton, TX this spring.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
I’ve had to unlearn self doubt. Navigating the part of me that can cause me to actively not believe in myself isn’t easy. Not everyone is going to believe in what you are doing and that is ok. Keep going.
