Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kimberly Atwood . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kimberly, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. One of the things we most admire about small businesses is their ability to diverge from the corporate/industry standard. Is there something that you or your brand do that differs from the industry standard? We’d love to hear about it as well as any stories you might have that illustrate how or why this difference matters.
Honestly, I don’t know if that’s for me to say but this is a little about what I do and why.
When I go into the studio, my top priority is to create music that is authentic to me at that point in time.
If I couldn’t live with my art then it wouldn’t be worth making.
Kimberly, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Singer-Songwriter from The Ozarks. I moved to Nashville, TN in 2016.
Growing up all I wanted to do is sing and write songs. I spent my years constantly singing, writing and playing shows around my hometown.
I had a longing to be part of a bigger musical community and I knew Nashville was where I needed to be.
After moving to Music City in 2016, I hadn’t found my place in the co-writing world yet. Early on I had a lot of time alone, forcing myself further out of my comfort zone, facing both old and new uncertainties in a new environment.
Before moving I had suffered writer’s block for three years. Yet as I poured my efforts into this new life, somehow, it unlocked the floodgates of my creativity.
Honestly, it felt like I had found myself as a writer. These real, vulnerable songs just started flowing out almost effortlessly. Even amongst the stress it was such a peaceful feeling and I knew I had written the songs for my debut project.
In 2018 I was searching for a producer. Artistically and sonically I knew what I wanted. Nashville is full of immensely talented people but the one name my mind just kept coming back to was Misa Arriaga.
We had never met but I had heard some of his projects and immediately connected to his style. I was practically broke and did not have any industry connections so the thought of working with someone as brilliant and unique seemed unrealistic…yet I was just so sure about it.
I sent Misa some work tapes and he listened to them…and liked them. We had some meetings and in March of 2019 began recording my debut EP.
Everyone on the team, from myself to the engineers and session players, value the art created. We put our hearts and souls into this project. It does not always take three years to create a six song EP but when it does it should be worth it.
This project introduced me, Kimberly Atwood, as a Songwriter and Artist. This is art I will forever be proud of.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
The first thing that comes to mind is when I was dealing with really bad writers block. As I mentioned earlier, before moving to Nashville I went through a period of almost four years where I couldn’t write a single song. That was heartbreaking since I had been writing constantly since I a little girl.
Luckily, shortly after moving I overcame that. I had to let go of trying in order for whatever was in me to find its way out.
Since then, the songs haven’t stopped and I feel so grateful to be able to express myself lyrically and melodically.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Hmm, I’m not really sure what my reputation is, but I hope above anything else, that people will see and feel my love and respect for this art form.
I vow to always put out quality. What I’m writing is what I’m feeling. My music has and will continue to have no bounds or labels.
I hope I never lose the vessel that allows songs to flow through me, because it’s such a gift.
