We were lucky to catch up with Kimberley Kim recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberley, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
At a young age I always loved to perform either in front of my parents or with my friends, for example, creating little plays, and acting them out, I loved dressing up and creating the ‘role’ so to speak. I wish I could remember more vividly the story lines, but alas, I cannot, but there were many. And with my friends, we always made our little sets and stage directions come alive. So something early in my life sparked a passion for this creative world.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got back into the film industry later in life, after becoming an empty nester and re-evaluating my passion for acting. I have always loved the idea of creating and melding into various characters. I do feel that one always brings the uniqueness of oneself and that interpretation of the character for me that is the fun part. I really want to encompass acting back into my life on a professional level. Because my parental commitments have lessened and I am able to juggle my other work life, which is in the area of finance, I thought yes, I am going to make this a priority. For me I really have learned through maturity, it is not about me, rather it is about what I can bring to the table for others. For example, filling a niche for an agent of being that ‘look’ casting wants. That is the angle I am approaching the business from. So that is how I put ‘my’ package together, and I view myself as a package that hopefully fits a lot of boxes!
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
The film industry has developed so many avenues to delve into now and will continue to have more. The constant learning about new techniques to find out about opportunities, how to make better tapes, get better lighting, market oneself, and connect with other creatives, is an ongoing thing, not only on a domestic level but global level. It is a 24/7 business and finding and using tools to get into it is a continuous battle of getting in tune with all that is out there! I love all the backstage, actorsaccess, castingnetwork sites but there still so many other things to learn about.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
I love the challenge of getting into the meat of the character and really finding that essence of having the dialogue roll off your tongue, which comes from being so in the moment of the scene, it is such an exhilarating feeling. I like that much more than seeing my work, in fact I don’t really care of looking at the final film work but mostly it is a tool to make corrections and see things that can be improved upon, as we always want just one more take!
