We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kimber Matherne. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kimber below.
Hi Kimber, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I believe that it doesn’t have to be hard to feed your family well each day. Somehow in the busyness of life, dinner time has become an increasingly stressful part of life for moms. Although I have no formal training, cooking is always something I have had a knack for. As a new mom, it became overwhelmingly apparent that many of my friends were struggling with how to manage the ever increasing demands of life with kids, and somehow find inspiration and time to get dinner on the table each night. This broke my heart because some of the best time of connections with your kids can come across a dinner table, and feeding your family should be a joy, not a burden. I made it my mission with Easy Family Recipes to lift the burden of the ever looming question, “What’s for dinner?” and provide inspiration and direction through simple, every day, family friendly recipes anyone can make! At Easy Family Recipes you will find ideas for what to make, including thoughtfully curated meal plans, and hundreds of recipes at your fingertips that use everyday ingredients and are quick and easy to make so instead of worrying about dinner, you can just enjoy time with your family.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi, I am Kimber. I am a military wife, and mom to 3 busy kids. I started blogging over 10 years ago when we were moving as often as every year to a new military assignment. In the beginning I was using it as an outlet to share the recipes, projects and travels that our family was experiencing, but my goal was always to share in a way that was useful to others so that it could develop into a business that could help people like me. Over the years I found that my passion really developed for helping busy moms figure out how to make dinner stress free so they could spend less time worrying what’s for dinner, and more time enjoying dinner with their family.
Easy Family Recipes has become a popular destination on the web where millions of people find inspiration for feeding their families each year. Every time I get a comment or email about how my recipes and meal plans have empowered a mom to feel confident, it makes it all worth it!
The best part of what I do is that I don’t have to sell anything. I am able to create recipes and tools that help busy moms just like me and able to subsidize everything through advertising. This makes it all accessible to anyone who needs it absolutely free of charge.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have worked consistently since I turned 16. I worked in high school, I worked in college, and I started my professional career just one week after graduation. I spent 6 years in corporate America, then worked up until 7 pm and went into labor just 5 hours later with our first child. During maternity leave my husband and I came to realize that it wouldn’t be possible for me to return to my current job due to the intense amount travel it required, so we decided I would try the stay-at-home mom thing for a bit.
While there was always the expectation that I would return to the workforce eventually, the frequent moves for my husband’s military career made it difficult to jump right back in. I loved being a mom, but I did miss the side of me that really thrived in business. After about 2.5 years at home, I came across some information about how there were people turning sharing ideas online into a business, and I was intrigued.
I had no idea what I was getting into, but I decided that if it could be done, I could do it! I spent countless hours after I put the kids to bed learning to build a website. Then I created content, took photos and videos, edited, and wrote. Not too long after I started I began making a few dollars. Using my corporate background in sales, I knew how to lean into what was working and leverage it to bigger success. While I can’t say it happened overnight, and it definitely took a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and sleepless nights, I was able to turn that vision of sharing ideas online to help others into a thriving business that serves tens of millions of people each year!

How did you build your audience on social media?
Even though I have been a content creator for over 10 years, social media doesn’t come easily to me. I have always found it hard to balance business and personal agendas and the constant need to supply more content.
I had an interesting turn around in the way that I viewed social media that actually led to the the way we do many successful things in our business today. Many years ago I was at a media conference and a photographer was leading a class on social media. I had been on social media for years already, so none of it was new to me, and I wasn’t expecting to hear anything earth shattering, but I sure am glad I was listening.
The speaker talked not about the mechanics of social media, but instead talked about how to use each platform in the way it was intended. In short he talked about authenticity. Instead of viewing each platform as another way to PUSH your agenda on people, think about what people are looking for on that platform and how you can provide it to them. For example in blogging, he said, on Instagram, no one wants to have to click all over to find your blog. If you want to tell them something, just tell them! You may not get a click to your blog, but what you will do is engage someone who whats what you have, and hopefully entice them to stay. That person becomes a loyal fan, and then it happens over and over again. All of a sudden you have an engaged audience that LISTENS to YOU! So instead of a blog click here and there, you have an entire audience now listening. And if you have an audience the money will follow.
After hearing that, I changed how we used social media. Through that I grew very quickly (having hundreds of thousands of followers on different platforms) and laid the foundation of what my business is today!
