We recently connected with Kimaya White and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kimaya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
From the beginning of my cosmetology career, it has always been my mission to contribute to the self-expression of women and to enhance the natural beauty of all of my guests, while educating them on the health and texture of their hair. It was always my goal to create a space where women can have a moment to relax from the real world where they can feel valued and respected regardless of age, gender, or background. I’ve personally experienced some terrible things in the salon culture over the years, and I wanted to do things differently for my guests’ future and present. I believe that going to a salon should be a 360-degree experience from the moment that you walk through the door, to the moment that you leave. Beauty is more than skin deep, and it is my goal to make every client feel confident, empowered, and beautiful both inside and out.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born and raised in the city of Charlotte, North Carolina and I am a licensed graduate of Paul Mitchell the School Charlotte! I knew as a small child that I wanted to be in the beauty industry, and it all began with Bratz Dolls. I was constantly begging my mother to buy me dolls because I wanted to experiment with scissors and different hairstyles. When I was growing up, if you had a hair appointment, you were going to be in the salon ALL day. I’m a visual learner so while I was there for my appointment, I would watch the stylists hoping that one day I could be just as amazing as they were. My mom always told me that “I took the ball and ran with it” because styling hair came to me so naturally. My senior year of high school I was looking into enrolling into a four-year university, but something didn’t sit quite right with me. I listened to what my heart was telling me, and I decided to take a leap of faith and take a tour of Paul Mitchell the School Charlotte. The moment I walked through the door, I knew that I was exactly where I needed to be, and it has been an amazing journey ever since. I specialize in natural hair, silk presses, and hair color (balayage, highlights/lowlights, block colors, etc.) Being able to contribute to women feeling confident and beautiful is why I am very passionate about all aspects of the beauty industry, and I think that’s what sets me apart from others. This is my eighth year of being a stylist and I still get excited because you can never stop learning. I am incredibly proud of how far I have come from just a childhood dream. I want all of my guests to know that it will always be my objective to make sure that all of them receive exceptional services, a calming experience, as well as tips and tricks on how to maintain their hair at home.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Surprisingly, TikTok has been the best source of new clients for me. I have never been a big social media person, but I began to put myself out there and it has helped my business grow tremendously. I always have to remember that everything is content, so my viewers get to see the ins- and outs of how I achieve certain looks or styles. Not only can they see the process but also the education that comes with it as well.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing your clientele is to keep putting yourself out there! Constantly showing up and being a walking billboard. If you look the part, then people will be more inclined to do business with you. Secondly, keep posting your work. It doesn’t matter if you get 1 like or 1,00 likes because it will be seen regardless. Continuously marketing yourself and keeping the clients that you already have will take you a long way. All it takes is word of mouth from one customer to keep bringing you more.
