We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kimaya Joshi. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kimaya below.
Kimaya, appreciate you joining us today. We love heartwarming stories – do you have a heartwarming story from your career to share?
Unfortunately, most people just hear about the Mediterranean diet. But many other ethnic foods are healthy too! As a Dietitian, I find it incredibly meaningful when a patient feels I met their cultural food preferences. I have had the privilege of working with many clients who consume primarily Latin American foods, one of them named CM. He was meeting with me to learn about nutrition for diabetes. Recognizing the importance of these cultural dishes in his life, I chose a different path than the “eat more salad” approach. We found ways to modify his current recipes, incorporating healthier alternatives while maintaining the flavors he cherished. CM was so surprised and happy that we found realistic solutions that we continued to meet monthly until his diabetes was at a place where he felt satisfied. I am so glad I was able to help him help himself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kimaya, and I am a Registered Dietitian with over 8 years of clinical nutrition experience. I own a private practice called Well Seasoned Nutrition. I provide nutrition counseling to people seeking help for their medical conditions. I specialize in nutrition for adults and older adults who have busy schedules, little time, or little interest in cooking. I hope to show people that eating well for health and for happiness can be the same thing.
Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Most of my clients have told me they found and contacted me because of my positive Yelp and Google reviews. I couldn’t be any happier! I think people appreciate that I help end the decision fatigue of “what do I eat now” that we all face. It can be exhausting. When clients meet with me, I help them quickly sift through the flurry of nutrition information out there and zoom in on how to prioritize accordingly for their medical conditions. I point them to specific foods or products to eliminate or incorporate into their diets to alleviate their concerns. No more guesswork!
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Aside from my formal education and clinical experience, I believe the ability to be an active listener is critical. Many aspects of someone’s diet are sensitive, and often, I need to read between the lines. The needs of a working mother versus an older person living alone versus a newly graduated young professional can all be very different. It’s up to me to be a good listener and meet them where they are at. Everyone deserves to have good nutrition, to be happy, and to be healthy.
