We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimathi Olenja a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kimathi , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
One of the biggest obstacles when it comes to earning a full time living in a creative field is getting past the imposter syndrome. I find that a lot of creatives struggle with the confidence to operate fully in their gifts. Once you accept and believe you are who you say you are, you can really start to earn. After that, it’ll take a whole lot of consistency and hard work. It’s important to remember that nothing happens over night. My turning point is when I walked away from a corporate management job, and started Cold Turkey Management, my own management company. I wasn’t sure what was waiting on the other side of a consistent paycheck but I knew I had to believe in myself and remove the safety net if I was ever going to be a successful entrepreneur.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I own an entertainment & sports management company named Cold Turkey Management. We manage artists and athletes as well as the events and spaces associated with them. Aside from a management company, I also have Cold Turkey branded clothing that we’re slowly releasing.
When it comes to our clients, we’re passionate about helping them achieve their goals and make their dreams of earning a living from what they love to do a reality.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I believe there’s been a lot of continued support for the creative community, especially in Atlanta. Mayor Andre Dickens and organizations like Invest Atlanta have been providing tons of resources and funding to help Artists, gig workers and venue operators stay afloat doing these challenging times.
: Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
The goal for me is to measure my success by how many people I’ve made successful. If I can be a bridge for others to achieve the goals, I’d say that’s a great legacy to leave behind when it’s all said and done.
