Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kim Wadsworth. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kim, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
I started taking Improv classes when I was 50 years old…also started learning to play guitar and pushing myself toward my creative goals.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into my craft by deciding that I had waited long enough to go after my dreams and by taking a leap of faith. I always wanted to be an actress and comedian, but I got trapped by my day job. The more successful I became by day, the less time I had to pursue my dreams, and eventually I gave up to support the people that I love. I still have the day job, I just push it to the back now.
I offer stand up comedy performances. Sometimes as a charitable donation to marginalized groups, 501c3 charities, mental health awareness groups, and military groups. I take it as my personal challenge to bridge social gaps that polarize us at times. I am working to normalize mental health issues and LGBTQIA+ plus issues while facing hard situations, and proving, that as humans, we are mostly alike.
The thing that sets me apart from others is my own diversity. I am an United States Air Force Veteran, a mom, a grandma, and a lesbian. It takes a lot of work to maintain balance in a chaotic world, and have people go, “Yea, I can respect that!”
I am most proud of the fact that I pushed myself to go on this wild ride and that I didn’t lose sight of me as a person, or my responsibilities to my loved ones. My followers and fans should know that I am genuine, what you see is what you get. I love hard and I love to make people laugh. My message to everyone is you are not alone and we can work together to make a more creative, unified, and diverse place to live.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Before I joined the air force, I had to change the trajectory for my life’s path. I wanted to be an actor…but was constantly told I was not pretty enough. And to be fair, I wasn’t trying to be a starlet, a leading lady, a beautiful woman…I just wanted to be an actor, because I was really good at it. I actually called up a comedy club in 1986, before I joined the air force and said, “I want to be a stand up comedian.” Only to be told that it would be hard to do. So yea, pivot, I joined the air force.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an creative is my son telling me he’s proud of me for following my dreams and that because of that, he wants to make sure he’s always following his own. It doesn’t get much better than that. Every time I’m feeling down, or feeling like I let him down, I am reminded that he is proud of me. He comes to support my shows, he brings friends to see my shows, and he shares my social media posts and reels. He is an amazing kiddo. Maybe one day he’ll realize that he saved my life. I’ve told him, but someday, he’ll get it.
