We were lucky to catch up with Kim Simon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, appreciate you joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I knew I wanted to pursue my artistic path professionally earlier this year in 2022 after I had started doing markets in September 2021. I was working a full time job and my “side hustle” was becoming more of my main hustle.
Every month it seemed that I was doing better and better and more people were seeking me out and coming to my table specifically to purchase things from me that their friends had or that they had seen on my Instagram page.
In May 2022 I decided to take the full plunge and go all in and make this my full-time job and life, after separating from the company I had worked with for five years, it was time to fully focus on something I wanted to do for myself. Now I eat, sleep, and dream of resin.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?
Well I wanna say hi to everyone reading this and I appreciate you stopping by! So a little about me, I was born and raised in Houston,TX. I’ve always loved art and have been making things since I can remember. I’m thankful to have a very creative brother that inspires me to seek out my own artistic abilities. Back in the 90’s I used to go with my family to this yearly festival called The Westheimer Street Festival, that was my first exposure to street vendors. Little me always thought it would be so cool to do the same thing.
I started making wire wrap jewelry in 2014 just for fun, and after posting it, people wanted to buy it. I made everyone I knew stuff, but eventually I took a break from making jewelry in 2019 after my mother passed away. I took 2 years off, and rethought what I wanted to do.
I came upon a video of resin and the lightbulb went off! I started doing tons of research and then bought the stuff I needed. I made jars, trays and keychains for friends and after posting a reel on Instagram, I had a few people message me asking me if I could make them pieces!
I’ve spent this whole time carefully crafting my aesthetic with the pieces I make. I used to make astrology birth charts for people im high school, so I have lots of zodiac signs and coordinating crystals in the work I do. I dabble in tarot as well so I love adding the cards to my work and seeking out new tarot decks to add. I’ve come to specialize in making tarot and zodiac trinket trays/catchalls, home decor like clocks, wall art, lighting, and altar tables. I also pick and dry out a lot of the florals I use in my work. I love including locally grown flowers so whoever buys something knows it came from Houston grown flowers. One of the pieces I make are original, my altar tables. I have looked so much for these and I seem to be the only person making them this way! It’s one of my most favorite pieces I offer.
Just know that if you ever purchase anything from me it is always a one of a kind piece, and there will never be a duplicate!

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being creative in your experience?
I would say that the most rewarding thing about being an artist is when someone comes up and they pick up a piece and they have got to have it, no questions asked, doesn’t check the price they just know that they need it in their life, and that fills my heart up so much. it only adds to it that this is my full-time business so when I see people get excited about stuff I make it makes me even more excited to make more work in the future. I will never not be over the moon excited when someone says “I’ll take this”.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Being impatient and trying to rush it all. When you work for someone they want you to hurry and get it done – that was my mindset. However, when you work for yourself, you don’t have to rush like that. With resin, you have to have patience when working. It will not hurry up for you and takes as long as it takes, I tend to want the results right then so I had to definitely learn to wait. Some pieces can be made in one day and some can take a week, so being impatient is something I had throw out the window!
