We were lucky to catch up with Kim Scott recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
This is a great question. Ultimately, the timing of starting a business depends on many factors such as market demand, competition, and personal readiness. However, it’s never too late or too soon to start a business if you have a solid plan and the determination to see it through. I started my business right at the beginning of the pandemic. Just when I was excited about getting started the world stopped. I was terrified and disappointed. I was at a point in my life where I was ready to take a risk in my passion, my purpose something that brought me so much joy and peace. We all know timing is very important. Now that I look back I can honestly say I started at the right time. It allowed me the opportunity to research the industry, define my brand and identify the purpose of why I was in this business. I think everyone was so excited to communicate with people during that time, that it made it easy to find support groups online such as Black Girls Who Organize, to seek advice from experienced entrepreneurs in the industry. If there was anything I could have changed it would have been to more comfortable in asking questions from my more experienced peers.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Kouture Kloset Designs is a professional organizing company established to curate spaces. Our purpose is to holistically inspire individuals by aligning day-to-day life routines inside and outside the home through designing personalized practical systems with a re-start to their space with just a simple tweak and organizing with a purpose. We transform our clients’ mindset to understand organizing is a lifestyle, not a trend.
Established in 2020, I was previously a traveling consultant who knew firsthand about clutter, being disorganized and poor time management. I decided to apply my data management and governance techniques used to design and manage data structures to enable users to extract the data they needed, to manage and organize domestic items in homes. Here at Kouture Kloset Designs, my team and I understand building relationships and meeting each client’s needs directly, along with equipping them with tips to maintain their newly created space, separates us from our competitors. For example folding tips, proper storage techniques, and minimalist tactics “1 in 1 out rule”. We provide effective time management strategies to make life less stressful by engaging and involving all members of the household along with implementing days for specific tasks.
What began as an organizing business has now since expanded into services that include closet installations, coaching DIY sessions, and neurodiversity organizing assistance which caters to individuals who identify with PTDS, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and hoarding disorder. We also have created partnerships with realtors for staging preparation and helping with the passing of loved ones’ estates.
To ensure we are properly identifying our client’s individual needs a consultation is held with the service to perform an assessment that includes measurements and pictures of the space. This is the most important step in building a relationship and getting to know the client. Once the service has been agreed upon, planning and designing take place. A 30-day post-consultation is provided after the service is rendered to ensure the functional systemic plan meets the client’s needs.
I am most proud of how we engage and build relationships with our clients. So whether you are looking to renovate for cosmetics purposes, a busy on-the-go parent/professional, or identify with a neurodiversity condition we are here to service you.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the lessons I had to unlearn and still today I have to be mindful is knowing my worth. What I mean by that is understanding the experience and quality I bring to my clients are valuable. When I started, I would downplay myself and would be grateful that someone chose me. With that, I attracted clients that were not my true target and ideal clients. So if I sold myself as mediocre then my clients perceived me to be just that. I found myself working extremely hard for clients that did not appreciate my work and walked away feeling defeated and frustrated. The switch came the day I started to take pride and demonstrate confidence in the work and the knowledge I was providing my clients. I was the professional, the expert that’s why they hired me and so I had to believe that. They needed me so I had to be confident in what I was delivering, who else would if I didn’t? So I made sure to continue refining my skills along with specific educational courses through organizations that catered to different areas of the profession. For example, the Institution of Challenging Disorganization helps focus on the brain-based challenges of being disorganized. Also, Black Girls Who Organize(BGWO) who provides monthly sessions with experts inside and outside the industry to help not just with our skills but our mental state as well.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I know with all the different platforms available to advertise and promote your business. You may find it strange to hear me say this but I am old school. Referrals and word of mouth have been my most significant source of engaging new clients. It all goes back to building relationships. People want to know who they are investing their money in and for sure who they are trusting their most vulnerable state with. Allowing someone in your home to see the most transparent part of you is a privilege and I do not take it lightly. Social media can portray us to be anyone. Being referred by someone means they trust you and respect what you offer. It’s an intimate encounter. You are sharing your life’s journey with me, the good, the bad, and the ugly. That’s what happens when you allow me in your home to organize your space. You’ve reached a point where you have identified you need help from all the dysfunction. You would not just refer anyone to family and friends if that trusting relationship was not there. Well, at least I hope not. LOL
