We were lucky to catch up with Kim Roa recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
As a solo travel content creator, I discovered my passion for creating content while I was travelling alone for the first time in Japan back in 2016. At first, it was just a hobby, something I did for fun while I traveled. But as I continue to create and share my content, I started to receive positive feedback and encouragement from friends and fellow travelers. That’s when I knew I wanted to take content creation seriously.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Kim Roa, I am 32 years old solo travel content creator based in San Diego, California. My goal is to travel to at least 100 countries while creating visual content that inspires, informs others about my experiences traveling solo to different parts of the world. When I started traveling solo, I found that I had a unique perspective on the places I visited including the local culture, food, history as well as practical tips and I wanted to share that with others who might be thinking about traveling alone but felt unsure or intimidated.
One of the main problems I solve for my audience is helping them gain confidence and knowledge about traveling solo. Many people are interested in the idea but may not know where to start or how to stay safe. By sharing my own experiences and insights, I hope to inspire and empower others to take the leap and explore the world on their own terms instead of waiting on others to explore places.
I believe what sets me apart from other content creators is that the idea of traveling solo as a woman can present different opportunities as well as challenges and I try to highlight how I navigate those experiences through my creative content.
I’m most proud whenever I receive messages/comments from people who have been inspired to take their first solo trip or who have felt seen and represented by my solo adventures. Knowing that I’ve made a positive difference in someone’s life is incredibly rewarding. I believe that solo travel can be transformative and life changing experience, and I want to share that message to as many people as possible.
How did you build your audience on social media?
As a solo content creator, building my audience and social media presence has been a gradual process. It takes time, effort and patience. I want to emphasize that one doesn’t have to feel that they need thousands of followers, I am still a nano content creator on all my social platforms but already I have brands recognizing my creative work and reaching out to me to collaborate. I started my YouTube channel in the beginning of this year and I am pleasantly surprised with the traction its getting. So if I can do it, you can too!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
My advice is to just upload that first youtube video or that first instagram reel, it doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t need to wait to have the best equipment, all my vlogs were filmed mostly on an iPhone which is something that I already have. For editing I use free softwares like inshot and capcut which is so amazing. As you keep uploading your content, you will keep learning on how to make the next one better.
