Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kim Richards. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kim, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Caring for Mama was born after I became a mom to my two girls. I knew after struggling with postpartum depression that I needed to get involved in supporting women and mothers. It started in early 2024 when I had the idea to gift friends with care packages filled with my favorite postpartum products. I sent packages around the country and dropped gift bags on neighbors doorsteps. I received the most beautiful responses and it was then I knew what I’m meant to do. Caring for Mama is my way of curating special care packages just for mama that include clean, nourishing products I source from women-owned businesses.
I want moms to receive these Caring for Mama packages and say, “Wow, this is just for me. It’s OK to take the time to take care of me.” It’s so easy to lose ourselves as parents and Caring for Mama is here to make sure that we pay attention to our needs too. As I grow this business, I’m also putting the practices to work in my own life, which is so important to me. When I commit to taking care of myself, I’m honoring the mission of Caring for Mama, and more importantly, I take better care of my family.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’ve been a PR professional the majority of my career, working in corporate biotech communications, education, nonprofit and tech PR. After having children, my focus shifted and I knew I needed flexibility in my work in order to be the mom I wanted to be. Starting Caring for Mama felt natural for me because it’s what I’ve been living for the past 6 years. My mission is to deliver love and care to mamas when they need it most. It’s important to me that mamas feel seen, loved and cared for because it’s so easy to get lost in motherhood and forget who we are. The care packages I’m curating are intended for any mama because the reality is that we’re postpartum for life. The care packages are thoughtfully curated and sourced from local, women-owned businesses. It’s important to me that Caring for Mama supports both the business owners and mamas. In the spirit of these boxes being for every woman, soon we’ll be partnering with a local nonprofit to ensure that mamas who aren’t able to afford the packages receive them in the moment they need it most.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
After seven years in a public relations agency early in my career I hit my wall and was craving a change. Instead of looking for a similar job, I opted to network in the community and discover other opportunities. In the process of networking in my passion areas at the time – arts and education – I launched into the next 10 years of my career running KDR PR, a public relations consultancy serving schools and education organizations. Once I started having children, I knew I needed to pivot again. I’ve had full-time jobs, freelanced, started organizations and everything in between from corporate to nonprofit, education and now e-commerce. My career has been anything but linear and I’m grateful for it. I’ve learned more about myself in these past 20 years than I could have ever dreamed of.
We’d love to hear your thoughts about selling platforms like Amazon/Etsy vs selling on your own site.
I’m currently selling on my caringformama.co site, and at the same time I’m also exploring other avenues for selling through other platforms, partnerships and at point-of-sale in stores. At this stage of the business since we’re an early start up, the path isn’t fully defined yet and that’s exciting. There are so many opportunities to connect with and support mamas. I’m grateful for the opportunity to do this work and lead from my heart.
