We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kim Reese. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kim below.
Alright, Kim thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Artistically, it is challenging to match the type of projects that would inspire me with the actual client work that I do. Most inquiries are driven by images of what has already been done and an interest in repeating it. I am a working artist and would like to think that each job is an opportunity for a fresh spin or approach to the project. It is not a new problem for artists. We need to work and pay the bills so some jobs are a means to an end. I really live for the cool jobs that allow me to work with more of a free hand. The more a client says “I love your work and I trust you…do what you want”, the more I am driven to create an amazing experience for them. I can give the client so much more because I am creatively invested in the project. The production of art is very personal so when I have the freedom to stretch my artistic limbs, the result is dramatically different than the the copycat approach. One of my favorite clients wanted a Halloween wedding. I had so much fun getting creative with all the different aspects of delivering a refined but seasonal wedding.
Kim , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I have worked in the hospitality industry for more than 25 years. This has been in a wide range of positions and exposures. Mostly, I have worked for myself and over time have developed a style that is uniquely mine. In part, this comes from my background as a working artist. I fused all of my studied disciplines( culinary, art, interior design graphic design, florals) into one. My brand is based on highly creative, artistic work that relies heavily on natural elements and a bit of whimsy. In short, I would say my brand is charming. I strive to create events, tablescapes, florals, etc. with an approachability that is paired with an elevated experience. I think my events linger with guests long after they have left the party. I am a master of planning, details and timing. I often hear guests say, “this is sooo much work.” Well, yes, anything really interesting is going to take work. It is all in the details and moments. It is the way that I can make people feel. It is an artistic nuance that is powerful. I believe that true entertaining is a dying art and I work with intention to make people have remarkable experiences that serve as an escape from the everyday life. I love that I can do this but in an approachable way so that everyone feels comfortable.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I love the idea that I have the power to transport people to a different world. It is empowering. The most rewarding part of being an artist is the constant problem solving and cerebral nature of the work. The work provides me with great joy. I believe that my ability to see the world through the lens of an artist is a gift. I have the ability to take in visual information unlike other people. This is incredible as there is beauty and intrigue everywhere.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Sure, you have to constantly look at your business and see what is profitable and what isn’t. I would love to say that I am independently wealthy and that my business is for my personal fulfillment and doesn’t need to be profitable but that isn’t the case. I have had to watch the market and the clients to know what I needed to do to be profitable and to keep growing. There is a lot of self reflection when you are running a business.
