We were lucky to catch up with Kim O’Neill recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you share an important lesson you learned in a prior job that’s helped you in your career afterwards?
Never take anything personally. My boss told me this shortly after I began working at a local police department. I immediately knew I was to heed the advice, but I also thought I already had a pretty decent grasp of how to not take things personally. There were several moments after that where different co-workers would speak to me in a variety of tones for different reasons, and I often remembered her words. “That’s right,” I’d say to myself; “It’s not about me. Don’t take this personally.” Until the one day my boss’ tone was signficantly different than all our previous conversations — and THAT’s when I knew that this was the REAL moment I was to practice not taking something personally.
Inevitably, at some point in life, we’ll have a conversation with someone and they may say something that sounds like they’re targeting us or picking on us. I do believe that other people can highlight our own negative qualities at times, and there are moments where that can be beneficial insight for us to reflect upon. There are other times when it’s best for us to pause; recognize what part of the message is accurate for us and what’s not; and consider that there may be other factors that led that person to say what they said in the way that they said it. When we can recognize this, it opens up space for grace. It allows us to remember that we’re all human and maybe the best thing we can do in the moment is to stay calm and have compassion for the other person who might be going through something. Then, take a deep breath and exhale out any tension that started to build up in you. We’re all human, and sometimes our stuff bumps up against each other.
Kim, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kim O’Neill, and I host the Every Day is a New Day show, and also provide authentic confidence coaching and custom meditations for strong, heart-centered women who feel like they’ve lost themselves and would love to reclaim their authentic, vibrant self. I always thought I was going to be a therapist, but in my early 30s I kept hitting roadblocks when I would start to pursue a masters degree. I decided to pivot and consider coaching and that path opened up immediately for me as soon as I decided to move in that direction. For my clients, aside from feeling like they’ve lost themselves in some way, a lot of my clients have unresolved past heartbreak that is also weighing them down. This underlying issue is often a big contributor to feeling a lack of self-worth or self-confidence and prevents them from manifesting more of what they desire in the present. The work I do with clients is often very therapeutic as they learn to heal from their past; re-open their heart; speak their truth; and say a much bigger yes to themselves as they move forward. A lot of my clients often end up getting new jobs or unexpected promotions as we work together, as well.
I think what sets me apart is that I take a holistic approach with my clients. I look at the whole person and not just the surface-level issue. I don’t think in terms of black and white; I think in technicolor! My clients can relate to that, and they want to restrengthen that connection within themselves for a more fullfilling life and/or work experience.
I think what I’m most proud of to-date is knowing that I’ve never given up on myself. Life can be hard a.f.! But it also doesn’t have to be. The more we allow ourselves to evolve and grow, the easier life can be. Sometimes that evolving part involves releasing attachment to people or things that make us sad. Learning how to shift our mindset, process emotions around that and expand our vision for our own future allows us to not only heal, but blossom into the next best version of ourselves — a version of ourselves that we won’t ever get to meet if we don’t ever see the value in the work.
My clients are brave. They’re intelligent; spiritually-inclined; and they’ve been through some stuff. They also love deeply, and are tired of hurting and not achieving what they know is the life for them. They want to feel authentically confident and FREE again. It’s my honor to work with every client I’ve ever had the privilege to assist on this journey.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Yes – and this isn’t a pleasant story, and I’ll be omitting most details, but it’s relevant. I’ve learned that the more public you allow yourself to be, the more open you are to other energies (people) — and not all people have positive intentions when they connect with you despite what they say to your face. A lesson I never expected on my journey, thus far, was having someone enter my world who did all they could to destroy what I’ve created. It was a horrible, very isolating experience, and I admit that I had some moments of feeling like this was the end of everything I’ve created and maybe I was supposed to give up. Then I realized this was one of those moments where my limits were being pushed. How confident was I truly in who I am and what I do in the world? Is one person and all their efforts to take me down all it takes to make me quit? I chose to put to use everything I know about energy and emotions and connected the dots between what I was experiencing and how it connected to other things present in my life. As a Certified Law of Attraction Coach, I HAD to ask myself: How did I attract this experience into my life??
There were so many lessons I learned from this experience, but one of the core lessons was about learning to love myself better and how to be my own best friend. I also learned about the ways I had been leaking my own energy; how to manage my energy better; and how to have better boundaries with people. I can’t control other people, but I can always take care of me and show up for myself. In doing so, I’m able to continue showing up for my clients and doing what I love, as well. Some life lessons we may never anticipate; and yet, when we can see how it all connects, it makes it easier to realize how our challenges are actually connected to the very things we say we want more of in life. We don’t always know what skills we’ll need to continue down the path we’re on, and those skill-building experiences sometimes come in very unexpected ways.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
1 Million percent, YES! I’ve always been passionate about loving what I do. It’s a must for me. I love coaching, show hosting, facilitating meditations and speaking. I still have so much more room to manifest what I desire, but I’m on the path that lights me up, and to me, that’s priceless.
