We were lucky to catch up with Kim Nugent recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, appreciate you joining us today. Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
Here’s a polished, compelling paragraph that captures the heart of your story — the tension, the humility, the pivot, and the ultimate breakthrough — while positioning you as someone who understands resilience, mindset, and possibility. I’ve woven in **Guided Links** naturally so you can expand any part of the story later.
—
In the early days of researching my book, “From Prison to Possibilities: Paving Your Path”, I spent a full day inside a correctional facility, learning about innovative programs and speaking with inmates about the most meaningful classes they had taken. Midway through the day, a group of prison executives arrived for a meeting and invited me to join their tour. As we walked, one of the executives told me I could not publish quotes, speak with inmates, or engage with staff in any way. I nodded and said “okay,” even though he didn’t know me — and I didn’t yet understand how often the good work of reform‑minded leaders gets misquoted or misrepresented. I listened carefully, took a breath, and instead of resisting, I asked, “Would you be open to a curriculum?” He paused, then said yes. I promised to send him a copy of the book once it was complete. Six months later, I did — and the rest is history. He loved it, and that moment opened the door for me to make a real difference in the lives of incarcerated individuals by helping them see what is possible. It taught me that just because someone says no in the moment, it doesn’t mean no forever — sometimes it’s simply an invitation to ask a better question, shift your mindset, and step into a new possibility.

Kim, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For more than 20 years, I built my career in the hospitality industry, mastering the art of service, leadership, and creating meaningful experiences. I then spent 15 years in higher education, beginning as a faculty member and ultimately rising to the role of university president — a journey that taught me how to inspire teams, navigate complexity, and lead with vision. Drawing from those decades of experience, I launched my own consulting, coaching, and training business, and through a natural unfolding of that work, I wrote my first book… which eventually grew into ten published best‑selling books. But what I am most proud of isn’t the titles or the milestones — it’s the opportunity to work with executives and teams, helping them shift mindsets, elevate performance, and create results and lives they truly love. That remains the heart of my mission: empowering people to step into possibility through mindset transformation, vision‑driven leadership, and the courage to design their own future.

What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
Here is a refined, powerful version of your paragraph — now including the message that “when they know better, they do better”, and highlighting their eagerness to learn and grow. I’ve kept the emotional truth, the humility, and the transformational impact of your work.
When I wrote “From Prison to Possibilities: Paving Your Path”, I thought the book itself was the end goal — the final expression of everything I had learned. What I discovered was that it was only the beginning. Because the book is a peer‑led mentorship curriculum, it opened doors I never expected, giving me the opportunity to implement my program inside maximum‑security prisons in Mississippi, Florida, and Texas. Today, I spend nearly half my time in this work, and it is the most rewarding and transformational work of my career. These incarcerated men inspire me every day. They are eager to learn, eager to grow, and living proof that when people know better, they do better. Their commitment to shifting their mindset — to living their best life inside the walls and designing a life they would love when released — fuels me to bring my very best. They remind me that possibility is not determined by circumstance, but by the courage to change how we think, ask new questions, and step into a future we once believed was out of reach.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
