We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kim Mogul a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, appreciate you joining us today. Any thoughts about whether to ask friends and family to support your business. What’s okay in your view?
It’s truly as simple as hitting share on your social media account, passing out my business cards. My mother is my #1 fan always bragging and calling me out in public- at times she’s better at networking than me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in a family where the beauty industry was sorta looked at as an unrealistic dream. There was no way to make a life let alone a career out of making someone, “look pretty.” I broke the rules so to speak enrolled into esthetics school without my parent’s knowledge. And that’s truly when my life started to make sense.
I am most proud that I followed my gut, it truly didn’t take long for my parents to see that I was actually pretty good at putting makeup on people and that I was making money!
Listen the best and scariest thing is to bet on yourself, and I did that and continue to do that. The only difference now is I have my parents support and my husbands. This industry can be lonely if you allow it to be. You need to be shrewd, network and make friends with other beauty professionals!

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
Let me take you back to 2014, I was 22 years old going to college and doing makeup on the side. I did the 9-5 for various businesses from JCP, Estée Lauder, Cleveland Clinic. I never stopped my side hustle. I knew one day I could do this full time. But I had to put in the hard work. It wasn’t until I got married had my daughter and son that I was able to quit working my 9-5. This is when my beauty career really started to take off, I was able to work when I could and slowly Kimm Beauty Mogul began to grow. The big takeaway was when I realized I could stay at home with my children because I could make my own hours. I control how much money I can make by the amount of time I am willing to put in. To own a business takes a considerable amount of dedication and sacrifice. It’s not easy you need to be in the right headspace and you need to surround yourself with like minded people who can elevate you when your feeling like your not succeeding.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Staying true to yourself. There truly is a client for everyone! Having strong boundaries and staying firm but professional has helped me grow and attract my ideal client. Nowadays you need so many forms of a portfolio, social media is key, learning how to grow and stay current is key.
