We recently connected with Kim Moffat and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kim thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. To kick things off, we’d love to hear about things you or your brand do that diverge from the industry standard
We are lowering the barrier of entry into politics.
Our board isn’t made up entirely of lifelong organizers, Instead, it represents the majority of voters – people who care deeply about the future of their community and country and are working to make a difference while fitting that into the rest of their lives.
We’re working to make information as accessible as possible and lead with education first. Not everyone has had access to the same level of civics education, so we’re constantly working to put our as clear of information as possible.
When people take the pledge to vote with us, we make sure they have a clear understanding of how elections, and election laws, work in their state.
Answering the question of “why” someone votes is deeply personal. We’re here to answer all the rest of the questions.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We Are Voters is a nonpartisan nonprofit working to increase voter turnout through education.
Our civics education program, Raising Voters, is built on the belief that a lack of civics education in school should not be a barrier to voting. We’ve built a training program for community influencers that teaches them about the importance of upcoming elections, clarifies their rights and state voting laws, and coaches them on creating events that register voters and prepare their community for upcoming elections.
This online program uses community influence, and psychological studies surrounding voter turnout, to increase the number of people participating in our Voter Pledge Program, which has three cycles of proven, habitual voter turnout.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I started We Are Voters as a documentary called We’re the People, which followed Wendy Davis’ 2014 gubernatorial campaign in Texas, following her incredible 13-hour filibuster for reproductive rights.
Watching Wendy’s filibuster changed everything for me. The documentary about her gubernatorial run became a documentary about elections in general. That then became a nonprofit known as We’re the People before we rebranded. From the moment Wendy Davis stood up in the Texas state capitol on June 25th, 2013, I don’t think I’ve gone one full day without thinking about how we can increase voter turnout.
What we’d later learn is that Wendy knew it was likely the bill would ultimately pass, but the filibuster gave constituents time to call their representatives and let them know how they felt about the bill.
Sometimes the most important thing we can do with our voice is make sure everyone else knows how to use theirs.

How do you keep your team’s morale high?
I read an interview with Mike Schur once where he said, “Best idea wins.” That’s been my philosophy.
Our goal, our whole entire goal, is to reach as many voters as possible. To increase voter turnout, because our democracy depends on it.
I like to think I’ve had some good ideas, but so has the rest of the team. The point of this work isn’t to inflate egos – best idea wins.
This is a very unique moment in history. We are months away from an election that is going to decide the future of our democracy. I’m not being flippant when I say that. This election is a fight for the future of our democracy. It’s deeply serious and it’s going to take a lot of work.
So if you already know you’re going to be doing hard work, why not make it just a little easier by removing the ego and knowing you’re doing the best possible job you can do?
