We recently connected with Kim Miss and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kim thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I’m happy as a business owner, but I’ll be honest , it’s not a 9-to-5 life. I’m pretty much on call all the time, working late into the night and sometimes right through to the early morning hours. The hustle never really stops. There are definitely moments when I wonder what it would be like to just have a regular job ,clock in, do your work, clock out, and not carry it all home with you.
The last time I really thought about that was after a long weekend of back-to-back gigs. I was running on hardly any sleep, still unloading equipment at sunrise while most people were just waking up for their day off. I remember sitting there, sipping cold coffee in my van, thinking, “Wouldn’t it be nice to just have a schedule that ends?”
But then I remembered… I’ve been my own boss for 27 years. I’ve built this from the ground up, I make things happen, and I’m in charge of every aspect of my company. That kind of independence runs deep. The truth is, I don’t think I could make the adjustments to a 9-to-5. It’s just not in me. I thrive on the freedom, the creativity, and even the chaos that comes with being a business owner.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I actually started out studying journalism and mass communications . I was going to be a reporter. I remember going to the university, excited to learn about internships, but every time I went, I kept running into a radio station from Miami that was looking for interns instead. I went several times hoping for something in journalism, but nothing ever came up. It was frustrating.
Back in the late 1990s, the mall was the place to be every weekend, and one day, to my surprise, that same radio station was there doing a live remote and looking for interns again. I thought, “What in the world this station keeps showing up in my face!” I spoke to them once, and then the final weekend I went back, I decided, “What the heck, I’ll give it a try.” That’s the moment my career in music, radio, DJing, and being an on-air personality began.
From there, I never looked back. What sets me apart is my longevity and dedication. I’ve been in the game for 27 years, and I’ve learned from some of the best talent out there. I didn’t just stop at experience; I kept studying, growing, and even went to production school after college to sharpen my skills even more. I’ve built a reputation for quality, consistency, and bringing positive, crowd-friendly energy to every event I do.
I think what truly defines me is that I never stop learning and evolving. I’m constantly applying what I’ve learned, testing it, improving it, and doing it all over again. That “rinse and repeat” approach has made me who I am today. I’m proud of the fact that I’ve created a lasting career doing what I love entertaining people, moving crowds, and keeping the vibe fun and unforgettable.
For anyone discovering my brand for the first time. DJ Kimmy K is about energy, connection, and experience. I’m not just there to play music. I’m there to create moments people will talk about long after the event ends.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met April about two years ago, and boy is she a talent! She knows sound like the back of her hand and can play over eight instruments. On top of that, she can sing, write, and connect with just about anyone she meets. I truly thank God for her.
I’ve worked with a lot of great people throughout my career, but April really stands out because of her range of skills and her dedication. She takes care of my sound and equipment, and she also performs live alongside me at some of my shows. Together, we’ve started building something special, our live musician-DJ duo called AnK.
What makes us unique is how interactive and dynamic we are together ,it’s not just about the music, it’s about the energy we bring to the stage and the way we connect with the audience. April’s creativity and technical know-how perfectly complement my DJ experience, and I couldn’t ask for a better partner in music or in life.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I built my audience on social media by being consistent and really taking the time to study the algorithms. Most of my followers are people I actually know, they’ve either been to my shows, worked with me, or are friends of friends. It’s a genuine, community-based following that’s grown naturally over time.
With so many people out there buying fake followers to look like they have bigger engagement, I made a conscious decision to stay authentic. I want my audience to be made up of real people who truly connect with what I do. The truth is, when someone buys followers and then can’t draw a crowd in real life, it shows and that doesn’t help your reputation or your business in the long run.
I’m not saying everyone’s followers are fake there are some amazing artists who really do have a massive, loyal audience, and I applaud that. But for me, the focus has always been on quality over quantity. I’d rather have a smaller but real and supportive community than inflated numbers that don’t translate to real-world connection.
My advice for anyone just starting out is: be consistent, be real, and focus on giving every single client and follower your absolute best. I treat all my clients like VIPs 5-star treatment every time. That’s what keeps people coming back, spreading the word, and helping your audience grow the right way.
