We were lucky to catch up with Kim McVicar recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I have always known that I love creativity and the arts. Finding a way to make a living off of it always seemed like the right thing to do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a comedian and former professional dancer (emphasis on former) originally from Canada. I have two standup specials currently out with a third on the way, Kim McVicar: Female Comedian.
You can hear my jokes regularly on SirusXM, She’s So Funny, RawDog, Spotify and more. I would say that I have been performing a form of comedy since the age of 5 when she was on Tiny Talent Time (Canada’s Star Search) and yelled “Don’t worry Mom I knew enough to lie for you.”
In 2023 I was listed as Top 9 female Comedians to watch. You can see what clubs I will be at next on IG @Kim.mcvicar
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
I said, go to live shows. Go support in person as much as you can. Who knows you might even decide you want to try stand up comedy one day.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
You never know who is in the audience. When I first started stand-up comedy, I was at an open mic. A lot of comics were being pretty mean to the audience. Long story short, one of the audience members, was a head of a network there to see a friend. Always try your best, you just never know where it will lead.
