We were lucky to catch up with Kim Lara recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’m currently involved in is my role as associate producer of the Broadway-bound musical “Dorothy Dandridge The Musical!” This journey is an extraordinary one, filled with challenges, triumphs, and a profound sense of purpose.
From the outset, being involved in the developmental stages of this Award-Winning show is both thrilling and daunting. Witnessing the transformation of an idea into a fully-fledged production, and being part of a Tony, Grammy, Emmy award-winning team shaping its trajectory, is an experience I’ll always cherish. The context of Dorothy Dandridge’s life, her struggles, and her triumphs add layers of significance to the project. Bringing her story to the stage feels like an honor and a responsibility—a chance to celebrate her legacy and bring her voice to a new generation.
As the project progresses and takes its steps towards Broadway, my sense of fulfillment only deepens. Seeing the impact of our collective efforts on stage, witnessing the audience’s reactions, and feeling the resonance of Dandridge’s story with people from all walks of life is immensely gratifying. It affirms the power of storytelling and the importance of representation not only in Hollywood, but the entertainment industry as a whole.
More recently, being selected as a participant in the Soho House Fellowship in Miami, courtesy of Creative Futures Collective and Soho House, has opened up new avenues for me to explore and contribute to the evolving cultural landscape. Through this program, I’m focusing on my latest endeavor, “Atlas”—a Live, Theatrics, and Creative company aimed at elevating events and spaces with artistic presence.
“Atlas” isn’t just about entertainment; it’s about creating meaningful experiences and fostering connections. It’s about bringing the magic of Broadway to Miami, year-round, and making theater and performers more accessible to a diverse audience. With a focus on production, creative services, and consulting, “Atlas” aims to not only cater to the vibrant community in Miami but also to expand its reach globally.
As a Soho Fellow, I’m excited about the opportunity to collaborate with like-minded individuals and infuse artistic elements into luxury spaces and events in Miami. I see it as a chance to not only showcase the talent and creativity of artists but also to attract investors and sponsors who believe in our vision for the future of entertainment.
My extensive experience in the theater and entertainment industry, coupled with my personal network of esteemed artists and creatives, strengthens the foundation of “Atlas” and its mission. By providing opportunities for artists beyond their traditional spheres and bringing their talent to new spaces, we’re not only enriching the cultural landscapes of spaces and places but also creating pathways for artistic growth and exploration.
In essence, both “Dorothy Dandridge: The Musical” and “Atlas” represent my commitment to storytelling, innovation, and community-building in the arts. They embody my passion for creating experiences that inspire, challenge, and uplift—an endeavor I’m deeply honored to pursue.
Kim, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My journey into the entertainment and creative industries has been shaped by a lifelong passion for storytelling and performance. Gaining an extensive theater education at The American Musical and Dramatic Academy, and New School’s School of Public Engagement, where I completed my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theater, I furthered my academic pursuits by earning a Master’s degree in Media Studies from The New School’s Graduate Program. Additionally, my business background education is evidenced by Associate’s Degrees in Business Management & Marketing from both Florida International University and Miami-Dade College.
As a multi-hyphenated performer and creative, I’ve had the privilege of studying at institutions such as AMDA and The New School. During my time completing my BFA, I became a published author for PopSugar Latina and performed in multiple productions. I’ve had the opportunity to perform with the Broadway cast of Chicago for Broadway Cares, record demos for new musical “Starting Up,” and make appearances on CBS’s “The Code” and Nickelodeon’s “Club 57,” and much more!
In addition to my performance endeavors, I’ve delved into production and leadership roles within the industry. As the Associate Producer for the Broadway-bound award-winning musical “Dorothy Dandridge The Musical!,” I contribute to its development and journey towards the stage. I served as the Associate Producer for New York Theatre Barn, where I also took on the role of Line Producer for NYTB’s Award-Winning New Work Series. As a co-host and performer for NYTB’s Musicals De Mañana: Latin Heritage Month Celebration presentation at 54 Below, showcasing my versatility and dedication to the craft as co-host, producer, and performer for the event.
Furthermore, my experience extends beyond performance into the world of modeling as well. I’ve had the opportunity to work with esteemed photographers and brands such as Makeup Forever, participating in campaigns that have further enriched my understanding of creativity and storytelling.
Recently, I had the honor of performing at Jacob’s Pillow as part of their first-ever Afro-Latin Immersion Program and was recognized with an award at Alvin Ailey. My journey in the entertainment industry has been marked by a commitment to excellence, creative exploration, and meaningful connections.
I’m excited about the prospect of leveraging my diverse skill set and experiences to contribute to the creative landscape in Miami and beyond. The opportunity to collaborate, innovate, and bring impactful stories to life is what drives me forward in my career.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Although I’ve faced my share of adversities in life, there’s one professional moment that truly challenged my own resilience. It was October 2022, and I found myself co-producing an Hispanic Heritage Event/Show at 54 Below in NYC for New York Theater Barn. The excitement was palpable as the show featured multiple new Latin musicals, all written by up-and-coming Latin writers and artists.
On the day of the performance, my greatest fear ensued during soundcheck when one of our performers messaged me, revealing she had tested positive for COVID and couldn’t perform. This news hit hard, especially considering that the performance was for a very reputable show and the writers would be tuning in on the livestream, including having their lead producer in the audience.
I’ll admit, I had a moment of internal panic. But when I informed my co-producer, his response was simple yet daunting: “You have 4 hours.” With determination fueling me, I quickly learned the song, balancing it alongside my myriad responsibilities backstage.
Just hours before the event, my co-producer—who was also hosting—found himself stuck in NYC traffic due to an accident. With the clock ticking and no time to spare, I took proactive measures. Recognizing the urgency, I began mastering the host script, ready to step in as co-host. My goal was clear: to ensure the smooth execution of the show, keeping artists and audience alike on schedule and ensuring everything was set long before the curtains rose.
Yes, I was trembling every time I stepped onto that stage, but the thrill of overcoming obstacles, especially in live theater was intoxicating. Despite the chaos, we delivered an unforgettable show filled with spectacular performances. To debut as a 54 Below performer, producer, and host all in one night was a reward in itself.
Anyone else might have crumbled under the pressure of that day—working with industry elites, facing a live and virtual audience, in an iconic space where legends like Patti Lupone had graced the stage just days before. But for me, giving up wasn’t an option.
Sure, there were moments when doubt crept in, when the voice inside whispered “I can’t.” But I pushed through, even when fear gnawed at me. Because the work I commit to isn’t just for me—it serves a greater purpose. My ability to navigate challenges and rise to the occasion isn’t just a trait; it’s a mantra that defines who I am.
This experience serves as a constant reminder of my resilience and what I bring to the table—a reliable, determined individual who thrives when faced with adversity.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Legacy, not just for myself but for my family, the family I hope to have with someone I love, and for future generations. While my passion for storytelling and performance is undeniable, it’s the idea of building something greater than myself that truly drives me forward. I see each project, each performance, as a piece of a larger narrative—one that transcends my individual accomplishments and contributes to my story.
Beyond the thrill of the stage and the excitement of production, I’m driven by the opportunity to create something meaningful, something that resonates with people of all walks of life and stands the test of time. Whether it’s through captivating performances, thought-provoking productions, or groundbreaking creative endeavors, my ultimate goal is to leave behind a legacy that inspires others to dream, to create, and to push boundaries.
Of course, my family serves as a constant source of motivation and inspiration. Their unwavering support and belief in my abilities fuel my determination to succeed. But more than that, I do it for them—for the generations that came before me and the ones that will come after, including my own children one day. I want to honor their sacrifices, their dreams, by leaving behind a body of work that reflects the values and aspirations they instilled in me. Something for them to be proud of.
In essence, my creative journey is driven by a desire to make a meaningful impact, to leave the world a little brighter, a little richer than I found it. It’s about more than just personal success; it’s about leaving behind a legacy that speaks to the power of imagination, the resilience of the human spirit, and the transformative potential of art.
