We were lucky to catch up with Kim Jackson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, appreciate you joining us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
I truly believe being an entrepreneur is a calling. I’ve known since I was a young child that I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I didn’t call it that at the time, but I knew I wanted to be in a position where I could have control of when I worked, where I worked, how much I was paid, etc. I eventually began to see entrepreneurship as a way to have financial freedom, flexibility to work around what I had going on in life, to provide income for others and to have a direct impact on those who purchased my product/service.
Having a “regular” job has it’s perks but of all the jobs I’ve worked, I never felt fulfilled in them. In fact, going to a 9-5 job began to feel like torture. Regardless of the pay or benefits, something internally would not allow me to enjoy working for an employer.
So, to answer the question, yes! I am much happier being a business owner versus an employee.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I had gotten tired of working my corporate job and decided to quit and pursue my dream of entrepreneurship. The problem is, I didn’t have an existing business or even a solid plan on what I would do. With a growing need to keep income coming in, I started doing residential cleaning as an independent contractor. I still worked for a company but I had the flexibility to set my own hours and pay. At the same time, I was still searching for the perfect business idea. I was not in a financial position to invest any real money into a business and I did not want to start a business with debt.
A few months into cleaning homes, I started to realize, I actually liked it and was good at it! I wasn’t just cleaning homes; I was helping make life easier for a lot of people. I found myself educating myself and looking for ways to become better at cleaning. Through cleaning, I discovered doing business with a purpose.
I began to get so many referrals that I no longer needed to work for the company I had been cleaning for. My clients alone kept me busy with a full-time schedule. Over time, I began to see that there is no shortage of people who need their properties cleaned. But there is a shortage of cleaning company owners who understand the ground work well enough to train and lead others to do high quality work. I started my LLC in 2020 and began hiring and training independent contractors to help take on the workload. As I got more people on my team, I began to take on commercial cleanings as well. Currently, we provide general cleaning, deep cleaning, Airbnb turnovers, move-in/out cleaning, post event cleaning and other cleanings catered to our clients’ needs.
I take pride in doing business with honesty and integrity and hiring people that are like minded. Whether it’s an efficiency apartment or an 8-bedroom home, our quality, professionalism and level of care in servicing that property should be unchanged. Communication plays a big role in the company. I believe in getting a clear understanding of what each client’s expectations are and ensuring that contractors are trained and prepared to handle the tasks. Our goal is to be consistent and reliable for all of our clients.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
Where there is a will, there is a way!! It may sound superficial, but I started the business with less than $20. I was already a person that kept basic cleaning supplies at home. For the first few weeks, I used things I already had and purchased only the absolute necessities. I also gave client’s the option for me to use their supplies, particularly the things that would cost me more to replace like vacuum cleaners and floor cleaning solutions.
As I started to make money, I began to re-invest the money back into the business to purchase additional cleaning supplies and newer equipment. I also began to invest in products that allow me and my team to work smarter.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me has been word of mouth. I believe that if you take care of what you have, you will be blessed with more. The support I have received from referrals has been amazing and I am thankful for anyone that has shared a post, business card, or mentioned my business to someone else. We continue to grow simply by doing an amazing job with the clients we already have.
