We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kim Hix a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, appreciate you joining us today. It’s always helpful to hear about times when someone’s had to take a risk – how did they think through the decision, why did they take the risk, and what ended up happening. We’d love to hear about a risk you’ve taken.
Aug 8,2016.I remember it clearly. I walked out the door and away from a secure, yet unfulfilling 10 year job at a local Globo gym, and onto the best decision of my career. After being an employee for 10 years, observing what didn’t sit well with my heart in the health & fitness industry, owners who were concerned with sales and not people, my time was now to do it my way.
Lucky for me, 2 coworkers felt the same way, & were ready to make their exit as well, with plans to open their own gym, in their vision. My luck came in, when they asked me to come with them to help get it going. No thought was given, my automatic reply was absolutely, lets go./
August 8,2016, the 3 of us walked out doors that were secure employment, but not satisfying, & leaving long time friendships, to take a leap of faith on ourselves.
Today, 6 years later, Tri Fit barbell is thriving. My business, Team Kim Fitness, is full, fun and rewarding. All my clients all acquired via word of mouth and referral.Being in this business since 2004 has afforded me many friends, acquaintances & a good reputation that I’m thankful for. That risk in 2016 was the greatest decision of my working career. To truly say that I go to bed excited to go to work (not really work to me) the next morning is a monumental gift that not many have.
Kim, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Fitness & health has been a part of my life since childhood. I went to my first gym at 14, and I guess never left. My college background however took more of the medical lead from my mom, getting a BS in Psychology, working in mental health for many years. Another decision took me back to school for AD in Paralegal studies, all the while hitting the gym daily. While there ppl would often ask me for advice, so after staying home for several years, I decided to pursue my biggest passion, Health and Fitness. My main focus is 1:1 clients and nutrition. I work with a private practice physicians office as his nutritional consultant for his patients, and other clients seek me via Facebook chatter & word of mouth. My greatest client accomplishment was a gentleman that I taught how to completely change his way of eating, exercise and nutrition, he took to it very well & lost 70 lbs in 3 months by implementing my teaching and nutritional guidance. He continues, over a year later, to maintain the weight loss and healthy habits.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Honesty. Character. Kindness. Pretty basic and simple. I’m not a pushy salesperson. I’m in this business to help ppl be healthier, feel better, and teach them how to care for themselves. I am not after making the sale, which is most of why I left the globo gym. My goal is to help. My reputation speaks for itself, if someone comes to me wanting help, we talk about how to help, not when can they write a check. I dont sugar coat, lie or give people false information. My workouts are somewhat different than others, and i enjoy being creative.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
💯no question about it. No. I love what I do. As stated before, I go to bed looking forward to the next day. I love my clients, my work family, our members, the comrade. It is my playground, not work at all. I have been in not so great jobs, the kind you are driving in trying to think of a good lie to call in….it’s a miserable life. To truly love what you do, so much that it’s not a job really, is a blessing. If any of your readers are ever in my area, Mauldin/Greenville SC, drop by Trifit barbell and say hi & let’s work out or talk Nutrition‼️
