We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kim Hibbs a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kim thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you scale up? What were the strategies, tactics, meaningful moments, twists/turns, obstacles, mistakes along the way? The world needs to hear more realistic, actionable stories about this critical part of the business building journey. Tell us your scaling up story – bring us along so we can understand what it was like making the decisions you had, implementing the strategies/tactics etc.
When Jan and I started flipping houses, we really dug into what it meant to build a good quality home. After learning about high-performance building and seeing that these better building techniques weren’t being implemented at a consistent level. That is when we decided it was time to go all in and start building custom homes that were higher quality and lasted longer than conventionally built homes.
Focusing on custom homes exclusively gave us the opportunity to develop processes that made the experience more enjoyable for our clients. This allowed us to also mitigate some of the common problems with building a design for the first time, and also learn how to solve problems in the field quickly without sacrificing quality.
In late 2019, we saw that our processes were strong enough to replicate in a location that is close to our hearts, Park City, Utah. We opened our Park City branch in February of 2020. We all know what happened next, but we chose a market that was quickly growing and saw an additional boost from the pandemic. Our approach to education and relationship building set us apart from other builders in the area, and with so many people relocating and becoming used to virtual interactions we were poised to help our clients move to the area in a way that met them where they were at.
Our flexibility is built into our processes, which is essential to any creative endeavor – from building a one-of-a-kind house to creating a business.
Kim, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hibbs Homes is a dedicated custom home builder, specializing in building high-performance homes that are more durable, comfortable, and energy efficient than a conventionally built home. We are a certified RESNET builder, which means every home we build is independently rated for energy efficiency and performance. That means our homes are measurably more than 40% more efficient than a cod-built home. We have been leaders in the home building industry, serving as an educational resource for colleagues, students, lawmakers, and more to help advance the industry and make better built homes more accessible around the country.
Any thoughts, advice, or strategies you can share for fostering brand loyalty?
Homeowner loyalty is essential to our survival. We build relationships with every homeowner we build for, and stay friends with them for years to come. We explain at the beginning of the process that choosing a home builder should be approached with the same determination you’d chose a spouse. Your home builder is someone who you have to trust to solve the problems that will inevitably come up through construction, and the relationship will last around a year.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Our entire team is dedicated to making the client experience an outstanding one, and we are always incorporating feedback into our processes. We have a lessons learned meeting at the end of each meeting to share all of the client’s sentiments shared with the team and find a way to make our experience for our clients and team better. We operate from the same philosophy you’ve heard time and again. We take care of our team, and when our team feels taken care of they will take care of our clients.
