We were lucky to catch up with Kim Engler Denae Marshall recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kim Engler Dean Marshall, appreciate you joining us today. Alright – so having the idea is one thing, but going from idea to execution is where countless people drop the ball. Can you talk to us about your journey from idea to execution?
We have had many discussions of starting our own podcast but we put it off for awhile. True crime was a topic we had always talked about and had an interest in. We knew there would be a lot we needed to do to prepare, but the biggest obstacle was deciding what we would do to set us apart from many other talented true crime podcasts. One summer night in 2022, we came up with the component of sharing our self care. We both were in a place in our lives where self care was becoming a priority. Once we had our plan, we figured we had nothing to lose so we set forth to make our podcast happen. We were excited to start our creative endeavor. With Denae’s husband being a musician, we had access to his home recording studio and equipment. He even made us our theme song! (Thanks, Stephen!) We set our trepidations aside and took a leap. Our podcasting journey has been loads of fun, and we truly enjoy creating content we are passionate about.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
We got into podcasting as it was something we wanted to do for a while. It was a lot of work to get where we are now. We tell well-researched stories about true crime and include anecdotes about our experiences and how they may relate to these stories. We use humor in a respectful manner and try to bring attention to lesser known cases.
How we set ourselves apart is not only our personalities and how we interact with each other but our interest in self care and what that means. We let listeners know that self care means something different to everyone! Each week we share what we did that week for self care and want to encourage listeners to do the same!
We also enjoy hearing from our listeners. We love hearing stories, people’s self care tips, and comments about what they think about the podcast. We stream on any podcast platform including: Spotify, Apple podcasts, and Amazon. Search Mysterious Mavens and if you see our ghosts you’re in the right spot!
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
There is a huge goal beyond our creative journey. We try to stay away from main stream stories that have been told many times and try to focus on lesser known stories. We want victims to be remembered, especially the ones who didn’t get as much public interest. Moving forward, we want to tell more recent unsolved cases because believe it or not getting the story out there and getting the right people to hear, cases can be solved!
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Talking to people about what we do and tell them how to listen to us. We’ve had discussions with people about recent cases and people get excited when we tell them about the podcast. Another strategy is being genuine and real. It’s hard to listen to people when it feels forced and not relatable. When you listen to us you are listening to authentic people who care!
