Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kim Douglas. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kim, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Was there an experience or lesson you learned at a previous job that’s benefited your career afterwards?
I was previously in radio. While it was fun and creative I can now look back at losing my job to format changes, etc and realize that it was actually good for me. Having things like that, stumbles, losses in life help you to dig in and find strength you might not realize you have. Moving forward into real estate, I felt like I actually had a “big girl job”, helping people buy and sell some of their most valuable assets. Every transaction is different, a learning experience. If things were easy, we wouldn’t learn.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been a realtor for 18 years, starting in the Philadelphia area and moving to Boston about 10 years ago. I help both buyers and sellers with their real estate needs. I primarily work in the Boston Metro area with Coldwell Banker as my broker, a company I’ve been with since the start of my real estate career. The industry is constantly changing and throwing us curve balls, this is where I feel I thrive. I love helping people problem solve. Almost every deal will have some sort of hiccup, it’s my job to help my clients maneuver through it and get to the finish line sometimes not even knowing that there was one!
I am a big fan of social media and use it to be creative in the ways I show what I do and how I can help people while keeping them informed, educated and yes, even entertained! I don’t take myself too seriously, I feel there is a way to be professional and take the best care of my clients while having fun at the same time. I am so proud of the team of collaborators that I have built here in Boston. From inspectors to lenders, attorneys and more I know that if I am referring them to my clients that they are in the best hands.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I moved to Boston 10 years ago to be with someone I was dating. I obtained my real estate license ahead of my move, then hit the ground running when I arrived. In real estate, there is no weekly paycheck and business does not just “come to you”. I had to do all of the things in order to generate business in a town where I knew only one person. While getting to know my new city I got busy networking, doing open houses, meeting other agents, anything I could to build a business from the ground up. It was not easy. Now, 10 years later I am consistently a top performing agent in my company. Time has flown by so quickly and it is absolutely gratifying to look back at what I’ve been able to achieve through a pandemic, interest rate changes and more!
How did you build your audience on social media?
Coming from the radio industry, I feel like doing things on line, on camera/microphones has always come easily to me. With that in mind, I believe it was easy for me to jump on board with social media. I can remember giving market updates/real estate tips on camera before anyone was really doing anything like that. I also have fun with it. With consistency I’ve been able to grow my audience by posting a mix of tips and comedy, not taking myself too seriously when sharing some of the behind-the-scenes things that happen on a daily basis in my business. I love to collaborate with other local businesses so that we tag each other and share with both of our audiences. I’ve also been able to tie in my podcast which highlights Boston area women, by sharing their stories online each week they also end up sharing and we both win by growing our audiences.
