We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kim Della Porta. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kim below.
Kim, appreciate you joining us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
I completed my Health Coach training certification in 2019 and since then I have focused on helping women and moms with their health goals through one-on-one and group programs.
Then earlier this year, I had a BIG realization (or what you might call a defining moment)! I was listening to a friend’s podcast and they were speaking about me as a Mom Coach and I found myself questioning what that REALLY meant for me…..
And as I sat and thought about it…..my mind almost exploded.
YES! I am a mom coach. YES! I do work with clients on their health, but it is also SO MUCH more than that!
My work with clients on their journeys expands into so many different facets of their lives – from health to confidence, to work to relationships and being a mom entails work on all of these things….and more! And my mind just kept going…. YES! I work with clients on routines, and planning, and organization, all of the things that we are responsible for AS A MOM….so why wasn’t I calling myself a Mom Coach?
I guess deep down in my heart, I knew it all along, but I wasn’t exactly sure how to communicate it until I saw myself through the lens of a friend and client and how they SAW me and how they FELT about me and the work we’ve done together.
So now I proudly call myself a Mama Coach and I’m excited to see what is next in my journey!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I haven’t always been a Mama Coach, before that I worked in marketing and PR and then I was a SAHM for a few years after I had my first son. The transition from marketing professional to a mama coach has been an incredible journey for me! Specifically becoming a mama in 2016 ignited my passion for healthy living and the rest kind of grew organically from there. Despite the joy of being with my son daily, I faced feelings of isolation and stress, realizing I had neglected my own well-being in the process. Motivated by a desire to be a healthy role model for my son, I embraced a lifestyle focused on nutritious eating, regular physical activity and making self-care a priority.
After changing my personal habits, I was still searching for additional ways to improve my health, the health of my family, and maybe even spread the ripple effect a little further. With the support of a friend and fellow Health Coach, I gratefully found the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, enrolled in their Health Coach Training program, and fell in love with the idea of supporting other mamas reach their goals.
Today, my goal is to use my experience and knowledge base to help others rediscover their happiest and healthiest selves through routines, stress management, self-care, time management and other health-related strategies.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
In addition to training, I think that being able to hold space for people, be nonjudgmental and able support them throughout their journey (whatever that make look like for that individual) is essential to being successful as a coach and mentor!
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
If I could go back, I think that I would choose to start my career as a coach and wellness professional sooner. When I was in college I took a nutrition course that I really enjoyed, but I always had it stuck in my head that I needed to graduate with a degree in Marketing. So if I had to choose, I think that I would change my path to have my first career in the health and wellness industry vs. marketing.
