We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kim Carr. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kim below.
Kim, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Today, I’m an author, farmer, photographer, and publisher creating true, nonfiction stories centered on farm animals and life around the farm. My first children’s book, Dandelion My House Chicken, introduced readers to the idea that farm animals are individuals with a ton of personality. I’m currently working on my second children’s book, Lucy My Rescue Dog, in which I share the true story of a dog my mom and I adopted. Thirteen days later she had a very unexpected surprise for us. I write my books to be entertaining, educational, and engaging. My goal is to give the reader a real look into life around the farm. Animal care, responsibility, compassion, dedication, community these are all just natural parts of the story.
Alongside my children’s books, I’m developing a future coffee table-style book to bring awareness to rare breeds of livestock and poultry. This is part of my heritage breed photo project that I have been working on since 2016. These farm animals are increasingly rare, and my goal is to document them in a way that is both visually beautiful and educational, helping preserve their stories and raise awareness about why they matter. While the audience may be different, opposed to the bright colorful children’s books, the heart of my work is the same: nurturing a greater connection for folks while honoring the animals that I so love.
I think my work creates the desired connection because it is rooted in real life. The stories and images are mine which creates a familiarity that my readers can relate to. The animals in my books and photographs are animals I live with or have personally met and have had the privilege to know. With doing the writing, photography and publishing everything feels very personal and I hope that comes across to my readers no matter their age. I’ve been told by my readers that they feel like they are right there on the farm and know the animals I talk of, like they were their own. This is the connection that I love.
I’m most proud of staying true to this path, even as it continues to evolve. My brand is built on authenticity, patience, and respect for animals, especially those that are often overlooked. Whether I’m writing for children or creating work for adults, my goal is the same: to foster understanding, kindness, and awareness through true stories from around the farm.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Don’t overwhelm yourself, it’s very easy to do. I’ve learned the hard way by spreading myself to thin. Pick a platform that you feel best fits your needs and work from there. I use to watch numbers of view, likes, follows, comments. It only bogged me down. Now I don’t pay much attention to that, it has made life less stressful. Just get out there and be you.
One thing that I feel has helped me on social media, I’m just me. I really don’t know how to be somebody else, I don’t want to be somebody else…I like me. I think folks like that. If we were all the same that would be pretty boring. My friends are not all like me, I wouldn’t want that at all. We all have different hobbies, interest, jobs, family types, it keeps things interesting. There are common threads that connect us, but we are all unique. I feel showing that on social media has helped to me gather a community so to speak, of folks that enjoy my story telling style and my photography.
I know it is hard to put yourself out there and for some folks this would not work, but for me sharing little insights into my daily life has created a connection that I feel good about, because I’m just me.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being authentically me. Life really doesn’t get much better than that. The fact that I get to live, create, and just be me and people are drawn to that, connect with me a human, that is more rewarding than I could ever have hoped.
In addition, being a creative it has put me in a circle, a very large circle, of other folks that are creative. I have made forever friends. I am inspired, intrigued, amazed, humbled, encouraged, and fueled by amazing folks every day.
