We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kim Beebe. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kim below.
Kim, appreciate you joining us today. Owning a business isn’t always glamorous and so most business owners we’ve connected with have shared that on tough days they sometimes wonder what it would have been like to have just had a regular job instead of all the responsibility of running a business. Have you ever felt that way?
I am absolutely happier as a business owner! I have been working for other people since I was 15 years old. I’m now 36. I started my business back in January 2019 because I was sick of working for other people for crappy pay, and I was sick of not seeing my family. Don’t get me wrong, there were jobs I’ve had that I quite liked, but something was always missing. Then when I had kids, it was so difficult to get off in any instances where they were sick, or didn’t have school, etc. I had always toyed with the idea of starting a photography business, but I wasn’t really pushed to the point until my kids were 3 and 5 and I was working 12 hour days (for barely any money) and missing all these moments with them. I knew there had to be something better.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Hi, I’m Kim! I sort of talked about how I got into the business in the first question, but to go more into depth, I’ve always loved photography since I was a child. Not just taking photos, but also looking at old photo albums. That was and is still one of my favorite things to do with family, is go through old photos and talk about the people in them. So more about how I made my passion a reality; one of my best friends is actually a professional photographer, and one day we were talking and she encouraged me to start my business. Ever since high school she told me I’ve always had “the eye” for it, but I was finally ready to make it a business.
I am a lifestyle photographer, and I specialize in photographing families and capturing connection between everyone. My tag line is “capturing all the feels!” and that’s what I aim to do at every session. I will not be a photographer for everyone, and I absolutely understand that and I am okay with that. If you like really polished, formal family photos, then I am not for you. I like fun, emotional photos. I like people to be okay with getting in the water, or running around in bare feet in the dirt or the sand. That’s what I love to capture and those are my people! Along with families, I also photograph maternity, newborn, couples and (coming soon) birth photography!
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist is getting my work out into the world, and making my clients happy. I feel so grateful that I get to do this as my career, and I wouldn’t be able to do any of it without my amazing clients.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Yes! I have to give a huge shoutout to Ben Hartley. His course ‘Booked Solid’ is amazing and I’m not even finished with it! His philosophies have already helped me so much in my business, and I wish every photographer knew about him and his course.
