We recently connected with Kim Bagramian and have shared our conversation below.
Kim, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Your ability to build a team is often a key determinant of your success as a business owner and so we’d love to get a conversation going with successful entrepreneurs like yourself around what your recruiting process was like -especially early on. How did you build your team?
No our business was just the four of us when we started in 2016, myself, my husband and our 2 kids. We have organically grown to hundreds of amazing volunteers and a strong team of devoted individuals whom which we are so thankful for. We all have the same heart and passion to reach foster and underserved kids locally and across our country who need to be seen and loved on their birthdays and beyond. We are little by little making a big impact in helping give thousands of kids hope and joy.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well Project Giving Light is a Christian nonprofit organization based in Orange County. Our mission started and still remains to be to change the world one child at a time. We want every kid, no matter their circumstances to feel seen and known. We want to share God’s love with every foster and underserved child across the U.S. and help them realize they have a future beyond what they can see. We have a so much fun getting to celebrate these kids and provide fun and meaningful birthday boxes that get delivered to them right where they are on their birthdays. It’s our joy to get to do this work. It provides our volunteers with such a heart warming feeling to give to others as well. We like to say it’s a double blessing. We are most proud of the people who we get to work with and the amazing partnerships we have. Working together well just blesses these kids all around.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2019 our birthday program was only in Southern California. Our furthest partner was in Los Angeles. We were only reaching places where our team could drive and physically go to celebrate the kids with a party. But my husband, Harry Bagramian began dreaming and scheming up a new vision God gave him. He actually got this vision while he was dealing with his own health struggles after having a stroke. He came up with the idea of the Birthday Box. A box filled with fun toys, games, essential items, meaningful birthday card, a devotional, and food gift cards that we can send all over the country to underserved and foster kids. This expanded our ministry ten fold immediately. Now we can provide the joy and the party wherever the kids are at with no limitations.
We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
Project Giving Light used to be something I did in my free time after meeting all my commitments as a stay at home mom of two little kids. However over the years and definitely in the last four years this is a role I have happily stepped into full time. It definitely has grown and our warehouse is a full blown production now. I’m happy to get to do the on the ground work with volunteers and groups that come in to support us while my husband manages all our social media, connections, partnerships, financials, etc. We are a great team because we divide and conquer and bring people in where the needs are. We are patient with the process and give ourselves grace where we are still learning. We currently have celebrated over 45,000 children to date and we are just blown away. Definitely has surpasses we what we imagined and the crazy part is, we feel like we are just getting started!
