We were lucky to catch up with Kim Ann recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kim , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Do you wish you had started sooner?
There’s a part of me that wishes I had started my author career sooner. Prior to this, I had a career in the computer industry, and then transitioned into being a stay-at-home mom. It was only when my children became teenagers that I finally decided to follow my dream of becoming a published author. Looking back, I can’t help but wonder what paths my writing journey would have taken if I had begun earlier. However, I also recognize that each phase of my life has contributed to who I am as an author today.
Kim , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’ve always had a passion for writing, and I spent several years as a freelance writer. I wrote uplifting articles about families, including my own, and they were published in various magazines, newsletters, and online platforms.
I’m no stranger to the world of self-publishing. In fact, I also provide assistance to both new and experienced authors in marketing, advertising, and distribution. You may recognize my books such as “Ruby the Rainbow Witch,” “Go On Vacation,” and the “Goldy the Puppy” series, which inspire young readers to use their imagination and develop a love for reading.
I owe my writing career to my 20-year-old son, Aidan. He was born prematurely and spent 143 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Five years ago, I took a leap of faith and pursued my dream of writing a children’s book. Today, I’m proud to be an award-winning and bestselling author of 26 children’s books, including my latest release, “Ten Little Starfish,” an adorable counting rhyming book featuring sea stars.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Being a children’s book author is seriously awesome! Why? Because there’s nothing quite like seeing little readers get excited about your books. There is nothing like having a tiny bookworm come up to you and say that they read your book every single night, making it their ultimate bedtime story. It’s pure magic! And get this, one mom even reached out to me asking where she could find a hat just like the one my character Ruby the Rainbow Witch rocks in my books. Why? Because her daughter is totally obsessed and wanted a Ruby-themed birthday party. Talk about rewarding!
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Your support means the world to authors! If you’ve enjoyed a book, or your children or students have, consider sharing your love by writing a review or recommendation on popular sites like Amazon, Goodreads, Bookbub, or even on our own websites. Your words have the power to make a writer’s day and help others discover our books. That is something we ALWAYS appreciate.
