We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kim Abt. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kim below.
Kim, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
I am a certified personal trainer and weightlifting enthusiast who discovered the transformative power of strength training on my journey to self-love and body acceptance.
Through my own weightlifting journey, I found a newfound confidence and self-love that I want to share with other women.
My mission is to empower women to discover the strength and beauty within themselves through weightlifting.
After 4 years of 1on1 personal training, I realized that I prefer training women over men for several reasons: I could better connect with them, women don’t complain and the put in the hard work that is needed to progress on their fitness journey.
I also realized that the benefits for mental health that come with weightlifting are just as, or if not even greater than the physical aspects, so I decided to change the focus on empowerment rather than fat loss. Once that mindset shift happened, clients actually started dropping more weight and stayed more consistent with their workouts.
Additionally I wanted to create a community of power women that support each other and offer them a safe space to workout and grow together.
Lastly, personal training can be expensive and I wanted more people to be able to afford my services.
Pwrgrls Training offers solutions for all these topics.
Women now have a safe place to workout and more people can afford it, as I was able to drop my rate tremendously by offering small group training.
The sense of community creates motivation, accountability and friendships.
Our ladies come from all different backgrounds, most of them start with no weightlifting experience and they can connect on the same goal of becoming a better version of themselves.
We are not like all the other fitness classes, we don’t do high intensity style workouts and we don’t overbook our sessions.
By keeping each session to a maximum of 6 clients, we are still able to offer the quality service and attention our clients need and deserve. We prioritize proper form and progressive overload. Our clients have access to the Pwrgrls App where they are able to track their progress in strength, nutrition and weight, additionally they are able to chat with our trainers in the app and join accountability groups.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Building a marketable and inviting social media presence by creating relatable content with the help of Canva, Video Leap and ChatGPT has helped me reach my target audience that turn into potential clients.
I have tried running ads on several platforms but Instagram & Facebook gives me by far the greatest turnaround.
Also joining Facebook groups and networking events has helped me tremendously to connect with potential clients as well.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I had a 10 year nanny career working for high profile clients, making a good amount of money and traveling the world with my job. I realized that I was giving up a lot of my personal life and that I did not have much more room to grow in that industry. So in 2020 I decided to take a leap of faith, quit my job and follow my passion for fitness.
Building a clientele and keeping myself accountable was not always easy but so worth it.
I now feel fulfilled and my income and therefor life quality have already grown more than I could have imagined in such a short amount of time- and the beautiful thing is that there is always more room for growth – personal and financial.
