We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kilo Sade. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kilo below.
Alright, Kilo thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Was there a defining moment in your professional career? A moment that changed the trajectory of your career?
Mental illness throughout my community is at an all time high. A lot of this is due to economical hardships, systematic oppression, and racial economic disparities.
I knew that being an Herbalist and Holistic practitioner wasn’t enough for me. I wanted to do more. I just had no idea which direction I would take Kilo Cares.
Then August 5th I learned about the passing of a dear childhood friend due to his complications of a mental disorder and the lack of resources to help him find his way back to himself. You see, there is really not enough help for black men and women who are dealing with mental illnesses from a medical standpoint. Not to mention in our community, mental illness is still a taboo subject.
I knew that I needed to do something. To introduce my community to alternative spiritual practices and services that will help heal the WHOLE of them.
I knew that in order for me to truly make an impact I needed to bridge the gap between the African American community and Holistic Spiritualist in our city. For years, the KC Holistic scene has primarily been white with a few of us trickling in the fairs. However there has never been a Black Metaphysical Fair in our city.
Myself along with my Sistars, Fellow Herbalist Rosie (Nature Made Me), and Reiki/NTuitive Coach Nicolette (Nrich Yourself), we created “Uplift” the First Annual Black Metaphysical fair in the heart of Kansas City, MO.
Our goal is to host this bi annually. We had over 30 Black owned and operated spiritual businesses from chiropractors, reiki healers, nutritionist, herbalist, yoga instructors and so much more.
The event was planned in two weeks and we had a packed house. Next year our goal is to grow it even more.
Kilo, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kilo Sade and I am an Herbalist, Spiritualist, and Motivational Speaker. My brand is Kilo Cares where I specialize in creating holistic herbal products and services.
I make herbal remedies, host low cost herbal classes, free tutorials, ebooks, and more.
As a motivational speaker I encourage African Americans to go back into their roots and spirituality by providing historical facts about our TRUE culture, African Spirituality, and Intentional Living.
I believe African History is the TRUE World History and by erasing it out of textbooks we have erased the truth of the World.
I believe it is my duty to carry the torch of Dr. John Henrik Clarke and others and continue on spreading the awareness and importance of African American History until Africans and African Americans are United as ONE.
My website is www.HeyKilo.org and includes my shop as well as my blog and podcast.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Authenticity and being true to the services and products that I sell: I’m well versed in what I do because I live it through and through. When you are within the spiritual field you can not fake it til you make it. You must truly live and be about what you say and what you do because the veils will fall as consciousness arises. There is absolutely no way to fake being balanced and that’s exactly what keeps me relevant and beneficial in my field. My authenticity and honesty keeps me connected to people of all walks of life. It also keeps my. Mind open and my heart pure because I know and understand how hard spiritual journeys are. How hard it is to unlearn the things we have been conditioned to know and live by. It takes a lot of honesty and accountability to push through but it’s such a freeing feeling once you get through it.
Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absolutely. This is where I always knew I’d be. I always knew that I was destined to be a change maker in my community. I always knew that I would aspire to inspire people to be free. To truly be free of all the pain and troubles of the World. As a child I’d look all around me and see so many people going through so many different trials and tribulations. I’d always want to solve their problems. Sometimes they’d listen. Sometimes they’d tell me to stay in a child’s place lol. However it never stopped me from looking at the World from a healers point of view. I knew I’d be here. I knew I’d be a voice for the voiceless. I’m just excited to see how many more lives i impact through my heart and words and see where this journey takes me and my community.
