We recently connected with Kiki Matoba and have shared our conversation below.
Kiki, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Following our intuition usually entails taking risks. Intuition is a feeling and inner knowing that leads us towards unfamiliar territory but is ultimately for our highest good. It can be as simple as receiving an intuitive hit to take a different route home which resulted in avoiding an accident or slow traffic. On the opposing side is our ego that wants to keep us safe and can hold us back or limit what’s possible. I’ve learned to follow my intuition even when it doesn’t seem to make practical sense and reflecting back I’m grateful I did.
Something that led to a life-changing risk and helped me strengthen my intuition was taking a weekly yin yoga class infused with Reiki for a couple years over a decade ago. This regular practice cleared away emotions and limited beliefs I was holding on to that restricted my confidence. After shedding these energetic layers my intuition guided me to divorce my partner of fifteen years, sell my house, and move from San Diego to Los Angeles. These were huge risks that completely changed the trajectory of my life! The growing pains weren’t easy and the struggle was real. There were bouts of self-doubt and agonizing anxiety becoming a single parent while starting an energy healing business. Eight years ago alternative wellness practices such as energy healing were not as popular as they are today so it was risky to start a business in this niche industry. I didn’t have a set business plan or vision of what my life would become but trusting my inner guidance step-by-step helped relieve feelings of overwhelm. I knew in my heart and from the profound experiences my clients were having that this was my soul purpose and what I was born to do. It’s become clear to me I have the ability to help people calm their nervous system which is how the body and mind can self-heal. Being in parasympathetic mode also taps into the power of intuition when the body and mind aren’t distracted by stress. Presently I added breathwork to my practice that also helps strengthen the connection to intuitive knowing.
Leaving my marriage with a three year old child appeared to be risky behavior to my friends and family but looking back I can clearly see my former life was headed down a toxic, codependent, and unhealthy path. I had to step away and change my environment in order to realize my authentic self and full potential. The risks I took have strengthened my self-love and confidence and introduced me to a community of fellow healer friends and extraordinary opportunities such as playing a sound bath for Goop’s At Home Summit, doing an online crystal workshop for Yelp, and leading Reiki healing circles for The Den Meditation studio.
It’s a courageous act to take risks yet it’s something that makes this life we live exciting and worth while. Our souls embodied to have physical and emotional experiences; learn and grow; and to express gifts and talents that enrich this world we live in. Risks push us to uncover, discover, and create. Risks help us tap into the limitless potential of the infinite field of intelligent creative consciousness.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was introduced to energy healing through a yin yoga Reiki class I took to re-balance my life after giving birth and integrating my new role as a mother. When the yoga studio offered a Reiki 1 attunement class I signed up to learn more about Reiki because it helped me feel relaxed, lighter, and happier. The principles and teachings made so much sense to me I knew I wanted to pursue this professionally. Reiki was an introduction into the world of natural holistic wellness that guided me to learn about meditation, chakra balancing, sound healing, breathwork, and natural healthy lifestyle practices.
I have a gentle style that honors and meets people where they are on their life journey and helps them slow down and release stress which is the root cause of many ailments. I have the ability to guide people into a deeply calm state where their body can tune into its healing mode and the mind can expand into a higher consciousness where their own intuition travels into dimensions above and beyond this physical realm. I’ve perfected my distance healing techniques that includes curated playlists of healing music so people can experience my energy work from anywhere. A few of my regular clients connect with me from the east coast and all the way to Saudi Arabia.
I also love playing in-person sound baths for groups and businesses because sound is one of the most efficient forms of energy clearing. Everything is made of energy and energy is made of light and vibration. Sound moves energy through vibration and can physically clear pain in the body and relax and re-focus the mind. This is especially helpful in workspaces to calm stressful overwhelm, improve cooperation through compassionate patience, and enhance creative ideas.
I’ve recently started offering meditation coaching sessions too. I like to compare this service to what fitness trainers do for people’s body. I’m an accountability partner that helps to re-train the mind to slow down, focus, and achieve clarity. There are hundreds of peer reviewed studies that prove the powerful healing effects of meditation yet people are still intimidated by the idea of meditating. The fact that regular meditation can lower blood pressure, slow the aging of DNA, and strengthen the brain naturally with no negative side-effects shows its inherent value. It helps to schedule time to meditate with someone in order to actually make the time to do it. Meditation is life changing! It’s the foundation to being able to accomplish all the things one needs to in this fast-paced world we live in. To celebrate this new offering I’d love to give any readers of this article 50% off their first meditation coaching session with me using Coupon Code: CANVASREBEL24
I’m most proud of helping people experience ease, peace, and calm in this intense, over-stimulating current climate we live in. When we allow ourselves time to slow down and ground we discover a clearer path and order to life. We are gentle and kinder to ourselves which in turn projects out to family, friends, co-workers, and beyond creating a happier experience of life.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
The lesson I had to unlearn was my subconscious belief that abundance is limited. I grew up with parents that were very practical and strategic with their money. This unintentionally created a story in my mind that I needed a certain amount of money in order to be safe. My limited belief created stress in my mind and body which then prevented me from finding solutions because I was in a state of fear only focusing on traditional ways of building a business. Then I became mindful and more aware of my negative thought patterns and started to shift them every time I caught myself in old mind loops. Now I’m more creative and flexible offering a variety of services that all help people find peace and calm but understanding some techniques may resonate better than others for different people. I let go of trying to control the timing of things and how I thought they were supposed to look like which has brought more joy into the process and more peace in trusting the Universe always provides what is needed even if that means asking for help.
Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
Being your own guinea pig and experimenting on yourself helps to discover what works best. Healers will attract clients that resonate with their own lived experiences so using practices and tools that have worked for oneself will also have the best results for your clients. I attended a lot of sound baths and meditation classes by different practitioners and noted what felt good for me and what I wanted to apply in my own work. Breathwork is another example that has a variety of different techniques and I’ve tried several starting with three-part breathwork then Wim Hof, Neurodynamic, Soma, and Somatic. I also like trying various dietary practices such as time restricted eating and supplementation to see what naturally raises my energy levels. Continuous learning and experiencing various energy healing techniques is key to being an effective holistic practitioner.
