We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kiki D a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kiki, appreciate you joining us today. Do you manage your own social media?
I manage my own social media. Over the past few years I have quickly learned that it’s all about being seen online for most to be profitable. Initially I felt I needed to try to keep up in order to stay in the front of the consumers mind whenever cake or treats were needed. I have realized that continuing to keep the quality of my work priority is what keeps me on their mind. I’d rather gain a loyal customer by word of mouth (or in this scenario.. taste of mouth) than gain followers. The likes/follows are appreciated but knowing I’ve made someone happy and pleased their palate is much more rewarding!

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m Kiki with Angels of Mine Cakes
Sweetening up your event with my custom made cakes and treats allows my love language to activate with each order.
Even though it’s a one woman show, from order inquiry to delivery/set up all orders are treated with care. Research and execution often come into play – I’ve learned quite a few things over the years in relation to kids characters, flavor combos, cake techniques etc – my cake Family is always keeping me on my toes!
What started out as a cutesy little pass time while on maternity leave .. all after seeing a few cake shows on Food Network (featuring the renowned Kerry Vincent) morphed into a love of creating edible art. Baking allows me to channel my love language and it goes into full effect with each cake starting from inquiry to execution to delivery. Although sometimes hectic, being the phone picker upper, kids character researcher, baker, treat dipper, decorator, salesperson, advertiser and delivery person wrapped into one – I wouldn’t change a thing about my cake life. I would do it all ten times over as long as I’m blessed enough to continue seeing the smiles and even getting that appreciative hug from my Framilies (cake friends that have become Family)!
Over the years I’ve been afforded the opportunity to give of my time where I am one of over 13,900 volunteers that have provided over 33,000 cakes of love! One such organization is Icing Smiles. Its mission is to provide happy memories to those Families of critically ill children in the form of custom cakes as they celebrate childhood milestones. Unfortunately although each cake baked/donated come with an immense feeling of joy and pride it also signifies the hurt, the ups and downs and worries that family is going through. So being able to take that frown and worry away for that day/time as they celebrate a birthday, graduation or possibly even an end to chemo treatments is a great honor on my behalf!
With this same organization I’ve been able to provide custom cookies each month to a family in order to lift their spirits! Each cookie dozen I decorate and wrap for delivery also brings a satisfactory smile to my own face!
Another is Lasagna Love where I am feeding bellies and making friends as well. I’ve not only given lasagnas each month but many times baked for these recipients as well – because who wants dinner without dessert! (insert big smile)
Working with these organizations have definitely fed into my love language of servicing and loving on others – baking each event sweeter one treat at a time! As I continue my cake journey I invite you to come along with me and see where your sweet-tooth will go.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
I’’ve learned along the way that there are some out there that do not mean good for you! I say that in terms of not everyone wants to or will be your friend/ally in this journey. There are some that are unfortunately out to deceive you by way of not paying for orders in the end (breaking that trust bond that was built over time). You have to learn to look for certain things and unfortunately realize that not all money is good money. But at the same time acknowledge that not all people are set up the same and will move in the same deceitful ways.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients has always been word of mouth in my opinion. Whether attending an event or hearing from a friend of a friend that their wedding cake was bursting in flavor and presentation – good news spreads in good ways. I don’t pay for any form of advertising, it’s all social media (what little time I am able to commit) and recommendations from appreciative people.
