We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kiet Vo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kiet , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I learned photography in a graphic design course in High School. Knowing what I know now, I wish I would’ve been more open to seeking mentorship. A lot of my struggle was because of my fear of asking for help. There are good and bad people in the world, but you’d be surprised with how many are actually willing to help. You never know until you ask. I realized that allowing myself to be vulnerable is also what allowed me to grow. Sometimes, you can be your own worst enemy.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Growing up, I found an interest in art. It was what set me apart from my siblings, but also something I grew recognition for as a kid. By the time I reached high school, I wanted to learn the different medias of art, and that’s when I came across a graphic design course that my high school offered. During the course, I was introduced to the basic principles of photography and picking up my first camera. After lots of practice in college, I grew comfortable with taking on new clientele. I now offer media services in portraiture and weddings. What separates me from others is my willingness to learn. I’m most proud of how far I’ve come in the industry and looking forward to learning more and more each day.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to build enough of a reputation and quality portfolio of work. I want to make a name for myself.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Receiving good feedback. Nothing gives me more relief than when clients reciprocate good energy in response to something you visualized.
