Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kiersten Rae Rummell. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kiersten Rae, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I’ve known since I was a little kid that I wanted to be a musician! I started taking piano & voice lessons at age 5 and truly fell in love with it. My parents tell me I was constantly writing songs, singing in the backseat of their car and always gathering up the family to perform little shows for them. In high school, I really started to take the writing side more seriously. And during that time, I decided to apply & go to Belmont University specifically for their Songwriting Major! During those 4 years, I learned so much about the craft of songwriting as well as the music business, and there I realized I wanted to write for other artists too.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a songwriter in Nashville! I write 5 days a week, working with up-and-coming pop & country artists, writers & producers in town. I also produce demos, sing vocals for other peoples music and write custom songs as a Songfinch artist. My favorite part of this job is crafting the song. Getting to figure out the puzzle & how to best serve the song is where I feel most at home. Another part of my work is performing my music, and I’ve been blessed to play at some incredible places including the legendary Bluebird Cafe & Tin Pan South Songwriting Festival.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
A tangible goal of mine is to sign a publishing deal. This goal drives me to write 5 days a week & treat my independent career as if I was already signed. But my true mission is to steward what God has given me well & honor Him through every song I write!
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I knew about NSAI & ASCAP earlier on in my journey. NSAI has connected me with so many amazing friends, writers and mentors. They have really championed me and put me on their TOP 40, Ones To Watch, and TOP 10 lists. They are an incredible resource for all things songwriting. I also wish I had gotten plugged into my PRO ASCAP sooner. My amazing rep Kele Currier has such a heart for up-and-coming writers and has connected me with artists, workshops and pitch opportunities. Very grateful for these resources, along with all the resources & professors from Belmont.
