We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kierra Rogers. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kierra below.
Kierra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Fashion Is Kie is my brand. The mission of my brand is to be an aid to those seeking professional help in looking and feeling their best. Fashion is Kie is able to fulfill this mission through our wardrobe services, photography services or through our online boutique. Customer service is a huge priority for the brand as we work very closely and personally to accomplish our mission in enhancing the self esteem of our clients. Fashion Is Kie houses opportunity for all things fashion, whether styling, photography, personal shopping, online shopping, closet revamping, style subscriptions and so forth. My name is Kierra and I came up with this name for my brand back in college because I’ve always exuded a love for all things fashion and I’ve always felt like fashion was the driving force and key behind complete self-confidence and energy.
There’s a quote that states “when you look better, you feel better.” I agree 1000%. I feel like when you’re comfortable and knowledgeable of your own personal style and what looks cater specifically to your style and body frame you’ve unlocked a super power.
Since I was a little girl, I’ve watched my grandmother with her love for heels and rhinestones. I always loved spending weekends with her so that I could play dress up in her jackets, heels, and accessories, sometimes even her makeup. As I grew older, tapping into my own style, I loved shopping for myself and just magically knew what pieces worked well together and what didn’t. I would recieve so many compliments from friends and classmates, even elders from grammar school on up. Starting in highschool and even further in college the compliments were amped even more, except now people were asking for my help and that’s when I realized I needed to start taking my gifts and talents more seriously. I was studying entrepreneurship and communications in college so I began learning how to market myself and create not only a name for my business, but a real business for myself out of my craft.
My brand is so meaningful to me because it has been a process and a journey that’s been evolving since I was a child. Fashion Is Kie began as a style brand serving looks daily and inspiring people with tips and tricks to enhance their wardrobe while catering to their personality and budget. Which then expanded from me just offering information to actually taking on clientele and setting up appointments for services such as wardrobe styling, online shopping, closet revamping, style duping, event styling, etc. I loved learning more about products, fabrics, body shapes, sizing, trends, designers and actually styling and capturing the look. I would hear people saying things like they hated their clothes or they always wore the same 5 fits or they didn’t know where to even begin to build up a wardrobe and I would always be so excited to help. Starting out dressing up reminded me of all of the dress up games I used to play on my PC as a little girl. But as I continued to help people, read different style books, and even while working retail, I realized it’s deeper than just putting people in clothing. I’ve had clients break down in tears or walk away with a new found glow of confidence like never before. Furthermore, the reviews I’ve received from my services have shown me that the impact of my services have really changed lives and I’m so thankful for the relationships I’ve built because of it.
Starting out I loved taking pictures in all of my stylish outfits and posting them on my social media outlets. I would meet up with a friend who also was a blogger and we would take photos of one another on our cameras. After taking pictures for her for so long I began using my Canon to capture moments and images of other sceneries and I found a love in doing so. My brand expanded to photography after soon realizing that I went from loving to take pictures of myself in fashionable fits to also capturing others in their happiest moments.
My mission has always been for Fashion Is Kie to be a one stop shop. Lots of people always complimented me on having an eye for style and snagging pieces they loved so I later decided to open an online boutique for the brand so that people could shop for pieces that I thought they’d love.
All in all, Fashion Is Kie is here to help you enhance your image. We believe first impressions are everything and your looks can determine how you look and feel as you conquer the challenges of our everyday lives. We also realize that life is short and it’s important that you not only capture those moments but that you feel and look your best in those moments. While shopping can be challenging, we are also here to provide quality, style, and comfort just for you! Fashion is Kie was built on a love for style, people, and the constant education of wordly trends of image, body shapes, and design. Because the brand is focused on catering to the needs of individuals on a personal level, customer service is our highest priority.
Kierra, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Kierra. I am a teacher who teaches 3rd graders. I am also a wardrobe stylist, photographer, and online boutique owner. I became a teacher when I moved back home to Chicago a few years ago. Teachers run up and through my bloodline and I used to play “school” growing up with my cousins. Honestly I’ve always loved mentoring younger kids and I have spoken to children about my career in fashion but I didn’t know I would become an elementary school teacher. It literally just fell into my lap. I always wanted to teach people coming up under me about fashion because I felt like it was such a struggle for me to tap into this industry and I didn’t want it to be like that for others. My love for fashion started as a little girl just playing dress up in all of my grandma’s fashionable pieces and from there on it stuck with me.
What sets me and my brand apart is that customer service is my main priority. Body image can be a super sensitive topic and I am very conscious of that. My brand is catered to motivate, empower, and just overall have my customer walking away feeling accomplished with a new found glow like never before. Not only do my customers walk away feeling confident, but they walk away each time learning something new about fabric, fit, or even themselves. THAT’S THE ULTIMATE GOAL!
Even as a teacher, what sets me apart is that I’m patient and I treat my students as if they’re my own. I’m not in their faces yelling at them, commanding them, or doubting them. I walk them step by step through disciplinary actions and learning until they’ve met their goals and expectations of my classroom and the school. I try to make learning a fun experience and something that feels achievable for my babies. They’re our future leaders so I try to pour into them as much as I can.
I am most proud of myself for my endurance. No matter the obstacle, how heavy life may seem, or how challenging things can get, I just keep going. My favorite quote is “It always seems impossible until it’s done” That quote has carried me through some of my toughest battles in life. I am proud of myself for all of my accomplishments and future accomplishments.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Yes. The goal driving my creative journey is the information piece. I feel like there are a lot of content creators tapping into “fashion” creating the same looks over and over for people to mimic but not many are actually being informative on how people can create looks specific to their style and body shape or why certain pieces, colors, etc. work together while others don’t. I love providing “style tea” for my clients providing them the insides on hacks, how to shop on a budget, pattern and color mixing, the outfit formula, and so forth.
Another mission, as I’ve stated before is that customer service piece that is VERY IMPORTANT. In today’s society people can be very cruel in business and I believe customer service is your best marketing tool. When you deliver excellent customer service to one client, they go tell the world and now your business is booming! This drives me even in my career of teaching with my students and their parents.
Lastly, the youth are my favorite people to cater to and I feel like their aren’t many people educating them on creative outlets, careers, or even offering the space to tap into those fields. One of my bigger goals are to be that and deliver those opportunities to different youth communities throughout the city and one day all over the world specifically through fashion.
How did you build your audience on social media?
I built my audience on social media from literally posting me in the outfits that I created. As many others say, consistency is definitely key. I would say first you should ask yourself is what you’re posting benefiting someone else because that’s what’s going to get you the views, saves, and follows. People want to learn, save money, and imitate. I would not only post my outfits, but once I got deep into my social media bag, I started posting trend forcasts for each season, outfit mood boards, reviews on award shows and celebrity fits, dupes and more! Posting things that people were interested in or information that was new to them definitely increased my insights!
