We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kierra Peoples. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kierra below.
Alright, Kierra thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
I am currently making a living as a full time makeup artist. I have my own business as well as employment at a photography studio (as an MUA). When I started taking clients in March of 2021, I barely knew what I was doing and wasn’t bringing in many clients besides friends and family. In the last year I’ve worked with other artists, photographers, stylists, etc. and started to get my name out there. I’m proud to say I went from having 1 client every other week to making a living now by doing makeup and facial services full time.
Kierra, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
For those looking to get dolled up for an event, to those who have any creative ideas for photoshoots, I help bring their vision to life through makeup artistry. I’ve worked in fashion shows, photoshoots, weddings and special events, helping everyone feel their best for the occasion. I take pride in my work and work hard to make sure I’m providing quality services. I love making personal connections with my clients and people I’ve met along the way, I plan on being in the industry for a long time as I expand my reach in visual arts.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can provide some insight – you never know who might benefit from the enlightenment.
As a creative, not everything we do makes sense to others. Sometimes our decisions seem impractical, our dreams seem “too big” , our timeline may not make sense…. These are things I once believed too before I started the journey for myself. Being a creative and a business owner means a lot of chaos and risks that usually don’t make sense until later on, but that’s something you have to have faith in. You have to have full trust in yourself and be open to any possibility.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Freedom, in a sense. I enjoy the range that I have as an artist and how there’s no “right” way to do anything. It’s a never ending journey of being a student, there’s always something new to learn and new skills to acquire. On the other hand once you find your niche, your specialty, it’s nice to know that only you can do it like you can, and that your art, your work is yours.
