We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kiera Wynn. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kiera below.
Kiera, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
I learned braiding from my mother. She stayed doing hair whether it was family friends or stranger it was a head to be done at least every other day at the house lol I remember being 9 picking up my dolls trying to braid it’s hair and I’m like this ugly I can’t do it on this so I started playing in my sisters head one day I did my sister hair my momma saw her hair and let’s just say momma pass the torch I did my sister hair and my friends hair and have been growing and blossoming since. I don’t think it’s really anything I could have done to speed up learning to braid and do hair but staying consistent and continuously practicing is essential to keeping up with the trends and new styles being created as the world age. I believe the obstacles that stood in the way of me learning more was me I can place blame on things but if I evaluate those thoughts it’s me I have to pour into me what I pour into other and jobs
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Getting to know the creator behind key’zotic kreations lol my name is Kiera I’m 33 years old born and raise in Jacksonville Florida I’m the mother of four lovely kids and new to being a dog mom lol I been braiding hair since I was 9 years old I got into the business watching my mom I saw my mom do hair almost everyday I saw how styling and braiding people hair made people feel and look and knew I wanted to be apart of helping people embrace their beauty while protecting and growing their hair. I’m a license cosmetologist i do almost any form of hair, silk pressure dreads weaves wigs sew ins coloring and dying cutting however I specialize in braids and plaits
I’ have some clients that’s been coming to me over the last five years that won’t let anyone touch there hair but me being told I have growing hands ive been working on a hair oil in which I ask my clients is it ok to place on their hair when doing braids or plaits. if allowed when they come back for a take down and restyle I measure the growth those results will be out late may and oils will be available for purchase at a later date
What sets me apart from any other braider I’m ambitious I’m dedicated I’m detail oriented I’m friendly my work is neat and precise I’m a fast braider most importantly I’m not a scammer lol most people requiring deposit and going with new school prices for the far most I’m always running a special and I do not require a deposit for your initial appointment however because I do understand why some not requiring a deposit to scam it’s more about wasted time if you cancel or reschedule with less than a 48 hour notice I will charge you a $25 deposit which would go towards you payment but if you cancel or rescheduled that appt the deposit is non refundable and a deposit will always be required for you to book appointments until established our time is valuable n I value you as my client let’s build a bond and rapport
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
The best source of new clients for me is through running specials and posting on facebook. Everybody loves a good sale right so if one week out the month you offer your service discounted they love your work you’ve gained a client and a couple referrals. You braiding with your client permission post your content that way they observe you working they become familiar with your vibes and work n guess what you’ve gained a client your vibe your work being shown going to reach someone
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I recently took the advice of some people I love deeply and stop working focusing solely on my business doing hair because I wasn’t taking pictures posting and being consistent in my work I didn’t have much clientele at first it seem slow and like business would never grow for me just open spot for previous clients my mind was getting cloudy with worry n doubt but then there was this voice that said you putting all that energy into dwelling when you could be putting it into building a lightbulb click n that’s exactly what I did I post everyday something bout my business create content practice styles in my free time everyday even if I don’t have clientele at least a couple hours go into my business where it’s a special I wanna run a video I’m posting a flyer im freestyling my doll head anything to support my business is included in my day and now I see more engagement more clients improvement in my techniques and stylist I see growth
