Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kielyn Simonson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kielyn, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today. Parents play a huge role in our development as youngsters and sometimes that impact follows us into adulthood and into our lives and careers. Looking back, what’s something you think your parents did right?
My parents always worked hard and taught us to do the same. My mom went back to school when she was 40 to get her master’s degree and become a nurse practitioner. Her program was two hours away, and she had me and my two sisters at home at the time. The gumption and dedication it took for her to rise to the challenge and make it work is impressive, and I channel her when I need to do something hard in my own business.
My dad spent years working for himself as a lawyer, and he is the one I call whenever I have a business question or need reassurance when I am facing a challenging situation. The one thing I can be sure of is that he will lead with sound advice, kindness and encouragement when I need it most.
Kielyn, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I have owned OrgaNice for four years. OrgaNice is a professional organizing company, and it was born out of my desire to be my own boss and do things my own way. I have always loved to organize because I love seeing the process of taking things from chaos to calm – it is so satisfying! It also seems that all of my career roles leading up to this one have involved a lot of planning, coaching and coordinating with people, which really works well with the “life coach” element of professional organizing. Our company provides professional organizing, packing/unpacking, decluttering, space planning, and move coordination services.
I think what I love most about what we do – because OrgaNice is no longer just me, it’s a team of organizers – is getting to know our clients. We meet people in all different stages of life, from first time home-owners to new parents to empty nesters and everything in between, and help them solve a problem that they have been unable to solve on their own. We are the fresh eyes, the blank slate, the ones who can come with solutions and feedback that will be just the thing to take away the little annoying things that you don’t even realize that you could live without. So often when we leave our clients say that they wonder why they waited so long to get help – it truly is a useful service!
Because of my background working in senior living, I work with most of our senior clients and provide move coordination services as well. This is a boutique offering that includes everything from space planning to packing, unpacking, hiring movers and other contractors, coordinating with facilities, and planning the day of the move so everything goes smoothly.
Heidi Ganser-Lang is my right hand woman, and she specializes in interior decorating and closet design. We have two part-time organizers on our team as well, with plans to expand into other services in the future.
I’m excited about OrgaNice’s growth so far, and can’t wait to see what is next!
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My growth strategy is pretty boring – I do my best to take really good care of my clients and I ask for reviews and referrals when I’m done with our work. The nice thing about this method is that good clients beget more good clients – when you work with a great person, chances are his or her friends are also going to be great. The ripple effect can take awhile, but it is worth it!
The rest of my clientele has been through Google, Yelp and Facebook/Instagram. I try to post regularly but not annoyingly, provide valuable content that showcases my brand, and lead people to my website, because I think that gives the best picture of what OrgaNice is all about and how we can help.
So far, so good.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Covid was a rough time for a lot of businesses, mine included. Obviously not being able to get into people’s houses was a pretty big hurdle to home organizing! As I have been in business, I have tried to become more comfortable with the ups and downs and trust that work would come when I needed it to, but the downturn of Covid tried my faith and comfort level with uncertainty more than any other time.
Thankfully, I qualified for a PPP loan to pay the bills, but it wasn’t enough to keep the lights on by itself for long.
During the summer of 2020, I landscaped my yard, baked a ton of cookies, worked on my website and my business plan and tried to have faith that when I could get back into homes safely that my phone would ring again.
Sure enough, as soon as things started to settle in the fall, that’s exactly what happened. Plus, with all of that time at home, everyone who had made plans to organize during quarantine and hadn’t done it was ready to hire it out – so enter, OrgaNice!
