Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kiden Smith. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kiden, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
With my extensive experience in photography, I have frequently encountered the pursuit of perfection. Although this topic may seem over-discussed, it remains relevant until a serious shift occurs. I deeply admire artists who emphasize imperfections and the authentic nuances of the human form, as I have always been drawn to this approach. I do not find beauty in perfection; I believe our flaws shape our identities. I focus on highlighting elements that are often edited out or removed from images. Additionally, I utilize mixed media to bring out different subjects in my work.
In my series, I often address “taboo” topics. Despite advances in media, I still perceive significant shortcomings in what we are taught and shown. My work explores grief, womanhood, and sexuality, presenting a raw and genuine perspective on how these experiences shape and enhance our understanding of beauty and livelihood.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have been immersed in art since a very young age, around 5 to 7 years old. My early exploration included drawing, painting, sculpture, and fashion, driven by a desire to integrate every artistic pursuit into one cohesive practice. Through this journey, I discovered photography and mixed media, which allowed me to combine my diverse interests into a singular creative expression.
I offer photo sessions for various occasions; however, my true passion lies in more creative and innovative work. Traditional formats, such as family portraits or headshots, often do not resonate with me as deeply. I find that a hands-on, mixed-media approach enriches my work, allowing me to create more impactful and important pieces.
I am dedicated to making my clients feel seen and celebrated as unique individuals—transforming them into living art. My goal is to elevate a simple image into a powerful representation that truly reflects the essence of the person being photographed. While a photograph can capture a moment, mixed media can bring out their inherent brilliance.
One of my core values is respecting and understanding my clients’ boundaries and stories. I strive to connect with them on a personal level, learning what resonates with them and what does not. This approach helps me portray them authentically, beyond mere appearances.
I take great pride in the continual evolution of my work and my commitment to exploring new creative horizons. I refuse to confine myself to a single niche, preferring instead to remain dynamic and open to new artistic possibilities.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Reflecting on my artistic journey, I recognize that I initially confined myself to being self-taught, before attending art school. There are so many resources available that can inspire you and provide skills you might not have discovered on your own. It’s important to acknowledge that you don’t have to rely solely on yourself, and seeking guidance is perfectly acceptable!
I also empathize with artists who feel isolated in their creative pursuits, as though their work is only understood by themselves. I promise, there are communities out there where your work will resonate deeply with others. You will find a group that truly “gets” and appreciates your artistic vision, beyond the surface.
Keep creating—this process will always guide you where you belong.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Doing what you love. The motto “life is too short” is my favorite. It reminds us to pursue what genuinely makes us happy. I have followed this belief for as long as I can remember, as I cannot see a life where I am unfulfilled by what I do.
Creating art presents its challenges, particularly in the early stages when self-motivation and drive are crucial. At some points, you will have to force yourself to create and we’ve all been there. Despite these difficulties, The essence of my perspective on life remains: pursue what you love, make the most of every moment, and live life to the fullest.
