Kiara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Crazy stuff happening is almost as certain as death and taxes – it’s technically “unexpected” but something unexpected happening is to be expected and so can you share a crazy story with our readers
I decided to open my salon in September of 2019. I was comfortable in my in my salon suite, but I heard God say move! So I went hunting and found the perfect space. My uncle and I came up with a design for the salon. I wanted the salon fill like a fun family environment while also having a suite feel. We decided to do partitions between the stations. I’ll never forget my uncle saying that he was going to make them 6 feet apart. We finished the design and loved it. We were finally able to open in January of 2020! Then Covid hit and we had to close in March of 2020. I had no idea what I was going to do. I just knew that I had followed the instructions that God placed on my heart and if I left it alone he would do the rest. 3 years later we are fully staffed and continually growing. I’m forever grateful that I took the leap of faith! It has been one of my greatest blessings!

Kiara, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Crown and Glory Beauty studio is a salon based in Pontiac MI. We specialize in inter grated extensions. On my journey to finding my niche I discovered that women of color didn’t have a lot of options when it came to versatility. I wanted to offer hair that didn’t just look good the day of their appointment but I also wanted the extensions to compliment their lifestyle. We also offer braids, nail care, makeup, waxing and facials.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
I started doing hair in my basement. I worked at Chrysler full time but I knew plant life wasn’t for me. When I went on maternity leave it was difficult because I had to leave around 6 months due to complications with my pregnancy. No money and a baby on the way left us in a terrible situation. I grew up in the salon watching my mom do hair and I had always did hair for my friends and family. One day at church I went up for prayer and the woman praying for me said that God told me to use the gifts that lay dormant in my hands. So I decided to pray and venture out to see if I could make some extra cash. I made enough to do the things I needed to do! I decided that this is what I wanted to do full time. I quit Chrysler and have been doing hair ever since.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Be good to people! People spend a lot of time with you as their hairstylist. It should be a place that they enjoy. Eventually they tell their friends and the clients just keep coming.
