We recently connected with Kiara Tyler and have shared our conversation below.
Kiara, appreciate you joining us today. Before we get into specifics, let’s talk about success more generally. What do you think it takes to be successful?
Some might say that it takes resilience to be successful, get knocked down 9 times and get up 10. While that’s true, I think the most important element to being successful is the ability to recognize and analyze why you got knocked down in the first place and prevent that particular thing from happening again. Continuing to get up and possibly make the same mistakes is repetitive and there’s no growth in that. You’re truly successful when you can analyze your mistakes and use them as steps that you continue to climb. Its a lifelong journey and you should always be climbing!

Kiara, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Kiara Tyler, I got into fashion and entrepreneurship after a brief venture making life-size shoe boxes. After receiving some unexpected advice from Deion Sanders, I decided to end the shoe box venture, one thing lead to another and I found myself working a 9-5 while building a clothing brand named Kalm. At Kalm we offer bold/casual attire, sportwear, and soon we’ll be offering evening wear and a children’s line as well. What sets Kalm apart from others is the design process and the foundation of how it was started. Kalm was/is built on The Art Of Creating Beyond Limitations, which is the ability to build what you see’ using what you have. What I’m most proud of is being able to stay grounded through the ups and downs. The main thing I want people to know about Kalm is that, it’s forever.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was lack of balance. In the beginning I thought that if I took my mind or eyes off the business that everything would go up in flames. I thought someone had to be thinking about it at all times. I’ve spent upward of 3 days straight thinking and drawing and pacing, waiting for something to happen or making sure that nothing does. It wasn’t until recently that I realized that its not going to grow any faster by me staring at it or constantly thinking about it. Also, it’s very unhealthy and unrealistic.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Customer service, sense of urgency and unwavering integrity helped me build my reputation. In todays climate, especially with social media making things so accessible, folks tend to forget that people are actual human beings. Every customer and potential customer online or in person were treated with respect and gratitude. Products fade, they only last for so long but people will always remember how you treated them.
