We recently connected with Kiara Pittman and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kiara thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
The Labeautory was literally created in my kitchen after researching and learning about different natural and organic ingredients that would help keep my skin moisturized in this Arizona desert heat. I was so frustrated that all the lotions I was using would not last throughout the day and skin as if my skin was just soaking up lotion leaving my skin dry and cracked. During my research I learned more about the different natural butters, oils and vitamins that would not only keep my skin moisturized and healthy! I initially only thought of myself when I started whipping shea butters but I soon started to hear friends say that they were also going through issues with their skin being dried out from the heat and not being able to find the right products to help them. Once I started to share samples of my whipped butters with friends and family, not long did they encourage me to start selling my products ! I had no idea if starting a business was something I wanted to do or could do but I decided to actually give it a try because “why not?” I eventually went to school for esthetics to learn more about skin types and even decided to expanded to add to my bath line. So far this has been a great decision even though at times when sales are low or hard trying to create content to stay relevant, I have to remind myself this business is MINES and to be proud of what I have started, doing and the possibilities of what it can be.

Kiara , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started my business “The Labeautory” back in 2019 after moving from California to Phoenix and experiencing the harsh desert weather. The continuous dry skin and hair; no lotion or one oil to help was horrible. I decided to create myself a product for my hair and skin that would bring them both back to life. The name, “The Labeautory” was thought of while in my kitchen concocting skin lotions and different products. I truly felt like I was in a laboratory at that moment . My products are great for those who are having a hard time keeping their skin or hair moisturized and looking for a organic, natural fix. Im proud to be a AZ local, women owned, black owned, small business owner!
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
My normal 9-5 helped a lot when I initially started my business venture. Applying to small business grants while building my business credit helped alot. It was a learning experience to say the least.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
Posting as often as I can with new content, release of product announcements or giveaways; through social media and emails have been helpful with staying in touch. Making sure customers know The Labeautory is thankful for their business, we make make sure add extra treats to their package ! Leaving the lines open for communication is also big and being welcome to feedback of all kinds.
