We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kiara Howard a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kiara, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My first client I got was from marketing on Facebook. There’s a group out here where clients can go to find stylist and I actively was promoting myself. When this lady reached out to me I was super excited, to have someone see my work and want to book was an unimaginable feeling when I’m in a field of work that is heavily saturated. To this day this wonderful lady still books me for her hair and with growth my skill she always say how she’s glad she found me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
So I am a second year stylist entering into my third. I specialize in extensions so wigs, sew ins, etc. I help anyone who wants to have a protective style to grow their hair while I also giving them a different look. I am most proud of the response I get from my clients once the work is completed. They are always blown away by how amazing I’ve made them look and feel. One thing I want my future clients to know is that your booking with not just with a stylist but with a friend, I am very big on customer service so I always like for my clients to feel that they are in an eviorment that is judgement free, many times I have clients that come and we end up just feeling comfortable to sharing deep conversations about life, family and more.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
One major lesson I had to learn is that your biggest support will come from strangers! In this business I’ve had people support me 100% more than those that were closet to me. Although there are family and friends who will support you, a lot comes from people you meet for the first time.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Last year, I had to take a major pivot in my business because I had to realize there are periods where you might not be as busy and booked and during those seasons that is the best time look over your business and re-evaluate the details, marketing, working on your skills, take classes, watching videos, it is the important growth that happens during that time.Which is a major factor in my business life and personal trusting that God is looking to grow me versus hindering. So Instead of looking at it like a down fall I look at it like a season to grow yourself and business.
