We were lucky to catch up with Kiara Aguillon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kiara, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
I started in television, which gave me the experience of navigating a fast paced business along with working alongside talent.
I quickly realized a myriad of soft skill were needed on the job. Diplomacy, adaptation, and flexibility are considered essential in this business.
Additionally, understanding the legal and business structure of tv appearances, logistics and organization are additional skills I acquired on the job. If I could go back to college I would have taken a class in contract law or negotiation but I was a quick learner and picked this up on the job.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I work for an advertising agency in our talent department. This means brokering deals for our brand clients who want to come up with innovative and exciting ways to appear on social, OOH, and other forms of media, particularly on social.
I started in TV and transitioned to more digital focused advertising as I saw the tides change.
I’m proud of the very high profile campaigns I’ve been entrusted to execute. From Keeping up with the Kardashians, to The Super Mario Bros. Movie to marketing for some major spirits and liquors.
In my spare time I also serve on a non profit board whose core mission is to eradicate bullying in schools, another mission I’m passionate about.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Your history does not dictate your future. Coming from a small(er) town, we were never taught to dream big and that’s exactly what my superpower is. I always dream big and think of the sky as the limit. I like to tell people no matter your history, you have the power to rewrite your future.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I recommend to any creator that I work with to understand their audience and cultivate community. Understand the culture on each unique platform that you’re on. Test, fail, test, fail, succeed.
