We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kiara Adams a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kiara, appreciate you joining us today. Can you recount a time when the advice you provided to a client was really spot on? (Please note this response is for education/entertainment purposes only and shouldn’t be construed as advice for the reader)
The best client advice that I’ve received and given is be the client you would want to have if you had a business. This simply means be the ideal person or client you would appreciate if you were in business. Customer service is a two way street and I think a lot of people forget that. We want to receive great customer service but give the bare minimum in return. Being someone’s client is a privilege. The way you were able to select them as the service provider, I feel like the service provider has the right to accept or refuse services.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hey babes, I’m Keyy. I am a licensed natural hair stylist that specializes in knotless braids, natural locs, faux locs, and natural hair care. I’m most known for my love of color in my knotless braids & butterfly locs. I got in the industry from falling in love with my natural hair after it being relaxed for most of my childhood. Natural hair will always be my first love and i want to spread that into others. I’ve created some amazing products for clients with all hair textures. I’m most proud of my ability to bring styles to life through colors. I think the brightness and amount of colors I use for my styles set me apart from everyone else.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met my business partner in business coaching. Her name is Bre Shaneke. She is the owner of Ricch Rootz Studio, which is also the salon I work in. We met in coaching, we started off as a group of 30 and narrowed all the way down to three of us. Out of the three of us, we got close and collaborated a few times together. Soon after she became my stylist and suite mate. We mesh so well together. Throughout this experience, she’s become one of my closest friends and we’ve created an unbreakable bond.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy that I’ve used to grow my clientele has been social media. When I first started building my social media. | started on Instagram posting as much as i could. When TikTok became popular, I took my talents to that platform. I posted consistently for awhile but didn’t see a lot of traction for a little while. Finally, on a random day i posted a 8 second video with a lot of colors but the same hair style. It took off! I couldn’t even reply to the comments because there were so many. The particular video to this day has 606.4K views. After that video, the rest of my videos went viral too and brought in so many supporters. I am currently sitting at 38k followers on TikTok. It was one of the most rewarding pieces of my career. I’m currently building my other platforms to match my TikTok.
