We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kianna McCurdy a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kianna thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
The story behind my mission of becoming a nail tech/owner is that I stuck to what I’ve always known which is nails. I turned my GOD given gift and created a business doing something that I love to do. I just took what I know and used that to start building my brand.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a 32 year old about to be 33 in may nail tech/mother. I always loved and enjoyed nails and doing them. I started at a very young age 12 to be exact. I’ve always had interest in nails I just love the artistic side of it. At the age of 16 I was working in a nail salon doing NailArt and as the years went by I started learning more and more. Over those years it taught me discipline on how to create a business doing something I love to do. During this time I was able to learn the business and create my brand Nails By Kianna LLC. I was so proud of myself for being able to start my own business and finally being able to see my hard work pay off. I remember when I was working at other salons I would be working 10-12 hrs a day 6-7 days a week . At first it working that many days didn’t really affect me until I had my 1st child then a new perspective arose because now I have a child and I’m no longer able to work these long hours anymore. So this pushed me to go into business for myself which I’m so happy I did. The pandemic hit us all hard especially me because by this time I have given birth to my 2nd child and I just wasn’t able to start back working even if I wanted to. At this time so many people was reaching out to me about getting services done. This helped me build a solid clientele and also some discipline. During this time I had time for trail and error and I was able to determine which direction I wanted to go in. While accomplishing so much in little time I was able to do a few celebrities such as Kash Doll, Ms. Miamibling, MingLee and a few others. Those opportunities let me know that my hard work have paid off.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
How I was able to really jump start my business is by using some of the resources that was given to us during the pandemic I used my stimulus checks to buy all my big items for my business such as pedicure chair, nail table , and other items needed to start up my business.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
This question is easy the main thing is being consistent once the client knows that they get five star quality every time they are kinda sold. Ik I provide my clients reliable tendencies and that’s what most people look for other other than doing a great job.
